can anyone suggest an alternative power unit to this model rather than the lifelike C420 chassis which seems to be unavailable

The website says you could use a Bachmann GP50 and cut one drive to extend the body

I would find a suitable length Greenmax chassis and use the chassis without the metal body cover which come with the chassis, using the whitemetal of the kit for weight.
Once the metal top structure has been removed from the Greenmax chassis it is relatively slim which is what you will need for the model.
