A hugely impressive storage yard, Michiel, but how on earth do you reach the back of it if something derails?

The total depth is 90cm (about 35"). I tested it, and with my entire arm and shoulder I can reach to the back for simple interventions (little push, re-railing or removing), but for maintenance (e.g. repairs) I can lift away the future modules on top, and then it's like working at the layout as I do today. So I'm confident that it will turn out all right. And of course, I intend the hidden yard to be really reliable... (touching wood again)

Thank you for the great feedback. It's always a pleasure to read your impressions, and even constructive criticism I can appreciate. There still is a lot to do, but progress is noticeable. Today I spend some time figuring out how to connect the loopback modules...

Today I started the construction of the first helix, at least the first stage. So some basic woodwork is again a part of my occupation this weekend. To my satisfaction my calculations seem to be correct...

Mini-update: I just build a temporary viaduct to connect both hidden yards together. That way I'm able to test drive the both yards. Now checking if I have enough pieces of track to make the connection by the viaduct...

There must be nearly 400 quids worth of points on just the fiddle yards!  :o

Makes the Nelevator look quite a bargain, doesn't it? And all that space saved, too...

306 to be exact. You get 36 points for the price of 2 new locomotives. And since I limited the budget for the layout at 100 per month, I have saved for more then 3 months to be able to buy the lot, not to mention all flexible tracks.

What is a "Nelevator"?

The Nelevator is a vertical fiddle yard! There is a thread on NGF and here:

I saw one at TINGS last year, an amazing piece of kit!
I'm not sure that it would be portable enough to use on an exhibition layout though....

All tracks have been laid, including the double track connecting both yards over the temporary viaduct. All detection sections have been isolated. For the moment I'm out of wire. I'm waiting for the delivery of more. Once the return loops modules have been wired up, I'll be able to start running trains digitally (but not automated, just by hand controller and switching points by finger)
