LX1920 - station Brussels-Luxemburg anno 1920
« on: July 26, 2015, 10:52:34 am »
Welcome college modeler,

A new thread for a new project. It's not entirely sure, but all indicators point towards the theme of my new layout being the station of Brussels-Luxemburg anno 1920. I'm still hopeful to acquire the original track layout of the station from last century, but it's a struggle to find it. But the coarse lines are set, and I can start planning.

Via Bruciel one can notice the general concept of the track layout: a pass-through station on a double-track mainline with adjacent a large yard of waiting tracks. The station is situated upon line 161, between Brussel and Luxemburg.

I will build the actual station with modules, which permit me to participate at exhibitions, but the rest of the layout (hidden yard, helices, ...) will be build into a fixed cabinet. I'll post on a regular basis the construction of my layout on this forum. I hope you'll enjoy this new adventure...

Michiel,

Good luck with this project - it's my kind of layout.

Best regards,

Joe

I just began the wood work of the cabinet. It will take a while before the first stage (level of the hidden yard) is ready. It's not really my thing, but it has to be done. Untill then...

Thanks Pengi! Although the website was still the old one about Brussel-North. I changed it now. But you'll notice that the new website is rather empty, which is logical. the project just started a day ago.  ;)

Markus, that is my intention. I try to get a little more speed in this project, but one never knows what the future brings. We'll see...

As said, the wood work has begun. Day by day the cabinet will take form...

I've developed a first version of the track layout of the hidden yard. In fact it consists of two hidden yards side by side. Each helix descends to it's own yard, with it's own loop track. I used the low-cost Peco points ST-5/6 because of it's compactness and good reputation.

The pros of this concept are:
- all track have the same length (2m, 12 long carriages)
- 12 tracks per side, with each track 1 long train or 2 (shorter) trains possible (48 trains max)
- Two hidden yards upon one level
- Only two turning loops for the entire layout (electrical loop module needed to avoid shorts)
- Test driving is possible within this level (via the yellow points)

The cons of the concept are:
- the use of two track crossings, which might introduce potential problems
- deepest tracks are less easy accessible
- A zig-zag in the red track (potential problems)
- Points are insulfrogs (potential pick-up problems)

Please leave a note if you have any remark, suggestion or critics about this concept. I'm working on an alternative to avoid the two track crossings. Tomorrow probably more news about that.

P.S. What are your experiences with Peco's ST-5/6 points in DCC operation?

Under the motto: why do it simple when complicated works well?!  :D This is the second version of the hidden yard design. It's a lot simplere! Disadvantage: smaller radius of the return loop (R2), and no more test driving within the hidden yard.

:D Maybe a tad exaggerated in size and expression, but thanks your feedback. It's appreciated.  ;)

Hi Michiel
Have you tried the trackplan with peco small radius streamline points in place of set track?
I find it difficult to maintain slow running speeds over insulfrog points and the ST 5/6 ones are such tight radius that those combined challenges are the only real running problems I find on my little layout.

An impressive ambition that you have here again though - enjoy!

Donald
