Well I sorted the short out, then I sorted the short out then I..............  Back to basics tomorrow. I see what the problem is but I need to redesign or rather rewire a lot of the panel. Not my favorite pastime!
Photos tomorrow. I can't hold a soldering iron and a camera at the same time.
Why ever not?
You have two hands  :D
I think it could be something to do with the wine. :-\ The soldering iron has  inflicted GBH on my fingers many times and the camera is my wife's so if anything happens to that I shall be severely dealt with.  :worried:

I agree, Brian. MUCH safer to do one thing at a time!

Drink the wine and consider the various options, such as buying something prewired from Brimal!

I more than understand how frustrating it can be and have one weird short that still has my few remaining brain cells befuddled.

Hope you find the offending bit of wire.

Sounds a pretty poor excuse to me  :P

Sorry about the lame excuses! I'll try better next time.
I think I've cracked the problem. I originally wired up for a single controller and then decided that a second controller would be a good idea to watch trains passing at Withy Jct. That's when the problems started. I went back to basics and rewired the switches. What I didn't take into account was the single slip. That was wired for a single controller and that was the cause of the shorts. I've now almost completed the rewiring of this and on a final check tonight there was no short. So fingers or any other part crossed that everything works tomorrow.

Er no, everything is not OK. I was checking everything this afternoon when my new Pictroller suddenly went bang and a lot of smoke came out. I'm going to have to send it back to get some more smoke put in
With one controller there's no problem but there's still a short which I can't locate. I'm outside my comfort zone now so I think I'll go back and just use one controller. At least there'll be less spaghetti under the control panel.

I have almost all my droppers connected to what I probably incorrectly call a bus via Plug and Socket Terminal Strips.

This lets me break a connection and check things out should when I have a problem.

I have one problem on a spur that needs investigating but I know I can easily isolate the section - I hope!

I think things are sorted now, but whether to my satisfaction I don't know!
While the new controller is away being repaired I thought I'd try an old Triang controller. If that goes bang, no problem. It has worked but now no and I've done nothing to it. Another thing to sort out.
A bit of track cleaning tomorrow to see if a loco will run. Don't hold your breath!

Sorry to read about your problems, Brian. I hope that you can get the controller problems sorted out, soon. I'd be very cautious about using an old Triang controller with N Gauge locos., particularly your new Dapol "Western". OLd Graham Farish locos. MIGHT be OK, but I would not risk it. But, I'm no expert and others may well know better?

I hope that loco runs ok so that I can breathe easily.

I have an old "test loco" which I use to test everything first. My other controller is an old Doverbeck which for it's age, about 40 years old, does a very good job. One of the reasons I bought a Pictroller was that it will operate all types of motor, or so says the blurb.
