Union Mills locos are ace - just think of them as Hornby-Dublo for N gauge: characterful rather than highly detailed perhaps but they will run and run. My latest has just arrived / an LNWR 'Prince of Wales' 4-6-0, 'Lusitania' - delightful !

I didn't realise they are metal die cast models, good value. Their advert in the Railway Modeller magazine advertises 2 of them on page 52a. I think you can only buy them by phone though.

I think I might get one 1 of these days.

Ian

Not true only by phone.  You can email Colin at colin.h@manx.net.  If you're squeamish about putting your credit card details in an email, phoning would be more secure, but I've got 13 UM locos now and all of them have been bought by contacting Colin through email.

Oh that's an awful tease!  Do share more!  The price list that came with your model, does it indicate which four liveries the new loco is available in?  Also, what is the price?

Many thanks.

Sorry - wasn't meaning to tease! I will try and post a photo later. Price is 82 and it comes in 4 liveries : LNWR black as 'Mark Twain', LMS red as 'Enchantress', LMS black unnamed , and BR black as 'Lusitania'. The last one is a bit dubious as the original loco was on BR's books briefly but never actually received its BR number and livery before scrapping. However, Rule 1 clearly applies in this case and I don't think it's too great a leap of imagination to pretend that the loco was given a reprieve and survived into the late 50s.

Dam!
That's me succumbing to temptation then - LMS red for me.

Thanks for posting this information, would love to see a photo.

I've started a new thread on the Prince of Wales but to whet your appetite here are some photos. These include three of the new Prince of Wales (one each in LNWR black, LMS red and BR black) plus 25694 in LMS plain black which is an older model, converted from a Union Mills Holden B12/3 with the tender cut down to represent the Bowen-Cooke style:

Worryingly, 5604 looks more like James the Red Engine than an LMS Crimson Lake example...  :(

PS: Mike, do you have some stray html code in your post that might be confusing the page layout? It seems to be the only page that looks a little messed-up.

Yes, I've never found that red colour especially convincing on his locos really. Its a pity, as 'Mark Twain is arguably the finest ready-to-run Pre-Grouping loco yet available in N. Who would ever have predicted a lined-out LNWR express loco?

If only it hadn't come down to a choice between several tins of Dulux paint and several Union Mills locos...  :(
