Title: Strange printer problem.
Post by: Dorsetmike on February 05, 2017, 06:04:28 PM
Changed the Magenta cartridge on my OKI 531dn, got a 231 error, supposedly a problem with the chip in the cartridge not communicating with the printer; tried numerous "fixes" from on line sources, cleaning contacts etc. The cartridge which I changed out when it was empty had no chip (low capacity one from new) so removed the cartridge chip, got "magenta empty" message, however tried a test print which works!!!!!!!!

Go figure! ::)

A lot of printer manufacturers include a chip in the cartridge it usually counts the amount of usage before signalling empty and stopping the printer. Quite often when nearly half the ink / toner is left. HP sneaked out a fix to some of their printers to stop non HP cartridges from working (they said it wasn't intended to do this when  caught).
Some  cartridges reset when reloaded others need a device to reset them.
I use a franking machine with ink at 75 pounds from the supplier reloading the "empty" cartridge gives as much again
