Pete Mc

I have only owned a few cars in my 25 years of car ownership.

Car number 1

This was a metallic brown Austin Metro 1.0l.It had a faulty starter motor when I bought it,though it only manifested itself on very cold, frosty mornings. It only turned over very slowly but did eventually fire up.Its other rather bad trait was its inability to start when the weather was wet from cold. This gave rise to a lot of cursing and swearing and a brother who was a gym freak getting very tired pushing it down the street to bump start it.

Car number 2

This was a Ford Fiesta 950 Pop Plus on an F plate from 1989.Bought just after I got married.Nuff said really, very reliable, unlike the wife, cheap to run, again, unlike the wife and was kept for 7 years.Got rid of the wife after just over 2 years. No pet name.

Car number 3

MG Meastro 2.0EFI.This must have been tweaked somehow cos it went like stink, though after a 950 Fiesta a push iron may've felt fast.Drank juice like there was no tomorrow and was as comfy as anything. It even left my dads BMW 318iSE trailing.Only had this for two years.

Car number 4

This was the biggest heap I have ever owned. It was a Ford Fiesta 1.8DL.I bought it in August 2000,summer.The significance of the purchase date became apparent in the winter with its total lack of ability to start without waking up the whole street in a morning. In order to get to the bottom of it,I did the cambelt, heater plugs etc,all to no avail.Ended up having the piston rings done cos there was no compression on two cylinders. This helped no end.kept it for four years in total, until the cambelt snapped. It bent three valves and one managed to damage the guides so it burnt oil when it was fixed. No pet name but lots of swear words again.

Current and car number 5

Skoda Octavia 1.9TDI 90 GLX.Its a 1999 year car on a V plate, has 83000 miles on it and is on its second turbo.First one went bang, formula 1 style on the A1 eighteen months ago.I could've cried that day, cost me £700 to replace the turbo.Otherwise its been the best car I have ever owned. Its metallic chestnut colour is quite nice and now there are more brown cars on the road doesn't stand out so much.Again,no pet name.

As you may've become aware,I don't give pet names to my cars,I just curse and swear at em when they don't work, but don't we all.

I also own a vintage Honda motorcycle. This is a Honda CBR600FP from 1994 vintage, with the Fireblade style graphics on the side.Colours are red, purple and blue. The red is a pearly type of colour and looks great glinting in the sun.Its kept in my kitchen and hasn't been ridden for a couple of years, but for 2012,I'm going to drag it out and get it running so I can go out for a few blasts and maybe a trackday as well.Donington's only an hour away and Cadwell Park an hour and a half.Problem is though,I need a new lid and leathers.Helmet is 10 years old,Whitham replica, and my leathers fit a 20 stone fatty, not a 13 and a half stone bloke that I now am.Gonna cost a few quid this riding lark is.New suit, about £600 ish, helmet £300 ish.How many locos would be converted to dcc sound would with that money?

Sort of missed the point of the thread then?  ;)  ;D

Currently between us we have:-

Ford Sierras
Sophia the Sapphire (2000E - the misses' car when we met)
Helen the Hatchback (modified XR4x4 - my car when we met - H*ELN numberplate)
Cassie the Cosworth (joint purchase show car)

Ford Fiestas
Mia the Ghia - 1.8 n/a diesel (my work car)
Miriam the LX - 1.8TDi (the misses' work car). Long story to this one's name - Clare is a BIG Jimmy Nail fan, and Jimmy's misses (before they sadly split up) was small, red-haired, and Welsh and was called Miriam. Our Fezzy is small, red, and came from Cardiff  ;D

Neither of us can stand kids and certainly couldn't contemplate the years of hell involved in raising one of our own, so our cars ARE our 'children'. Certainly cheaper than kids, they come with an off-switch, and they don't constantly whinge and moan. No contest.  ;)

Don't get me wrong, the cursing and swearing probably was what I could say is a kind of name.Maybe if there was another Mrs Pete Mc,she would've given them a pet name.It doesn't seem too blokey for me to give a pet name for anything. Its a car or a bike, and I'm pretty sure if I turned up at me dads or anyones and proclaimed that my current car is called Vees, they'd look at me like I'd gone round the twist. Its just not me,sorry.

As for Jimmy Nail,I saw him as Oz in Auf Weidersehn Pet when I was a kid and thought he was good in that but in Spender,he was great. When I got Sky in 1995,one of the channels, bravo I think, repeated it constantly for.quite a while, late at night.I never got bored watching it,shame it doesn't get shown anymore.

LOL, glad you took my comment in the spirit it was meant, I know lots of blokes would cringe at giving their car a name  ;D

Clare knows practically everything there is to know about Jimmy Nail, probably more than Jimmy does  :smiley-laughing:  In a roundabout way if it wasn't for him we wouldn't have met - she was also impressed by the Spender series, she fancied him rotten in that suit, but was also impressed by the Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth he drove in all three series. This led her to get a Sierra Sapphire when she learnt to drive (couldn't afford a real Cossie so bought a 2000E with Cosworth bodykit), which led her to join a car club, which was where we met  :)

Now we have our own Sapphire Cosworth it was her name that went on the logbook, something she's always dreamed of. I'm nice like that

Sadly JN is very self-critical of his own work, and never sanctioned Spender for release on video or DVD. However, you can get hooky DVD sets on eBay that have been recorded from the TV, quality is OK and ours are still going strong despite thousands of plays - it's Clare's porn stash  :smiley-laughing:

I remember going to the NEC for the car show when Ford launched the Sapphire Cosworth.I can't remember whether it was the 2wd or 4wd version but I sat in one on their stand and was in love.Sadly,I could never afford one and if I remember rightly,£17k was completely out of my price range. When I bought my house it only cost £28k.A few months before my marriage collapsed,I did go to a Ford car launch event at Althorp House, the Spencer family pile in Northamptonshire for the launch of the Ford Maverick. They also had the RS range their as well and got to drive a Ford Escort RS Cosworth.Man that was a quick car,220bhp and 4 wheel drive,it also looked fantastic what with the huge rear spoiler and bodykit and those lovely alloys. That sort of performance is available in a cooking Golf or Focus ST.

A bloke I know has a lurid green Focus RS with the Volvo engine in.This sounds absolutely wonderful on full chat.

My next car is going to be a Skoda Octavia VRS TDI Estate hopefully,so I can perhaps lug my not yet started exhibition layout around the country, but for now I think I'll carry on with this one, theres nowt wrong with it at the moment and seems silly for me to splurge £10000 on a car when I don't need to.
