For the ripping part, I would recommend Handbrake. It is an open source project and available as a free download from:

http://Handbrake.fr

Or

http://download.cnet.com/HandBrake/3000-2194_4-12651232.html

As far as read/write/play you are probably ok sticking to the free Windows utilities.

Hope this helps

Unfortunatly Ive had to delete the software after it flooded my PC with malaware/junk/and unnamable rubbish as soon as I installed it  :veryangry:

That's unexpected, Handbrake has been well-behaved software for quite some time.

Out of interest, did you get it from the handbrake.fr site directly, or from download.cnet.com?  The latter has a tendency to install all manner of crap if you don't follow exactly the right twisty-turny maze of install options...

I've had no problems either with Handbrake.  If you didn't already I would try downloading from Handbrake: http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php

I avoid CNET for the reason mentioned.

Cheers, Mike

:-[ I took the cnet.com route which may have been the problem.
I will retry again in a few days via handbrake.fr once Im satisfied that I have cleared all traces of '*rap'. that I am still being pestered with

Many apologies for posting the CNET link. I use a Mac and therefore malware isn't a problem for me, so I clear wasn't thinking protectively enough on behalf of my Windows using brethren!

Like some of the other posters I have always found Handbrake, like most open source software, to be impeccably behaved.

To try and make it up, I will recommend another little open source free utility called Subler. After you rip a DVD you can use Subler to add details such as title, description, cast, artwork etc. I guess the rule of the game is to download it from the source rather than a third party!
