Title: Farish 2018 announcement
Post by: scruff on January 05, 2018, 10:55:09 PM
Bachmann/ Graham Farish are announcing their 2018 range this sunday..

Any guesses as to what they might try and tempt us with?

cheers

Here's my speculation:

New tooling:

Class 25/3
Crab or LMS Compound 4-4-0
Thumper (class 205) 2-car unit
Cut-away cab 47s (RES, Freightliner, 47/8)

Reliveries:

Initial refurbished white/rail blue striped livery 101 or 108
Strathclyde PTE orange/black 101
Silverlink 150/1
Northern pre-2016 livery on 150/2
Maroon Hawksworth carriages

Scenecraft:

March station buildings and signal box
Prefab 1960s/70s station
Yellow container crane

NB - I don't think a retooled 158 will be done soon, neither VEA van

Quite honestly I don't have any feel at all what will be announced. I don't expect very much new tool stuff, and would be happy just to see some progress with the Thompsons the J72 and especially the 8F with sound.

What I would really like to see is a larger LNER tank loco as it is the only company amongst the "Big 4" where not a single tank loco is produced by anyone, nor has there been anything since the Farish "Holden Tank" (now there's a thought!).

Any more GWR stuff would be of absolutely no interest although I think a 94xx a might be reasonable guess given commonalities (I understand) with the 64xx chassis.

Diesels - it would be going some to better the 40 which is currently in a league of it's own in British N in my opinion diesel wise. I can't see any of the quirky modernisation plan ones featuring but just maybe we will see the 44/45/46 given the 40 treatment (we can hope).

Final thought, seeing the 00 breakdown crane, wouldn't one of those be nice, even if simplified for N. I still have a Knightwing kit to build but I doubt it would come close to an RTR model from Bachmann even with my best efforts.

I would like to see the LMS Twins and a MN rebuild which would sell better than the streamlined (air smoothed) version IMHO.
Also J72, N2...Lord Nelson, S-15...there are lots of gaps in all of the Big 4 companies compared to OO where things are getting very bitty and duplication of minority interest prototypes is now happening.

But i don't think we will see anything jaw droppingly spectacular. Would be good to get some earlier promises delivered on.

Bob

PS it's Hornby's big announcement weekend too. And did someone mention Dapol? That's soon too.

Regarding train packs and sets:

Add-on pack of Mk2 coach and class 101 DTS (observation car) in special Highlander green/cream for 370-048 class 37 Highlander train set

70th anniversary of British Railways in 1948 and the locomotive trials train pack (or set):

WD 2-8-0 77000 with wagons
46162 Queens Westminster Rifleman with Hawksworth carriages (trialled on Western Region)

I second gc4946 suggestion regarding the extra coaches for the highlander. Some regional scotrail MK2 and 37 to keep it company would be good as well!

Would like to see the shrinking of the OTA wagons and class 90 as well as more mk2F liveries but that request may be a bit premature.

The add on pack would be handy also a Wick/Thurso trainshed in Scenecraft range

Think we will see one of 25/3 158 or 117

OTA timber wagon

37/4 and 47 in EWS i am also hoping for a Motherwell metals pool 37

I'm not second guessing anything, but scaled down from 4mm, a Derby lightweight, Cravens 105 and a K3 could find a home with me.......as would a new version of the Holden tank!

Well, with less than 24hours to go, I won't pretend to have a clue really what, if anything, they'll announce. However, what I'd like to (semi-realistically) see is:

Class 24 with headcode box (D5114 - ), in green, with a Scottish number (Tablet catcher a bonus). I'm holding off ordering the etch conversion kit from @EtchedPixels (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=222).

Another Class 25 sub class, in green.

LMS Twins, in late service green.

Class 105

A1 60162 St Jounstoun

BR Mk1 Kitchen Car in Maroon, to go with the RFO (arguably the least likely out of my wish list - pie in the sky, indeed.)

BR MK1 BFK

Another BR(S) EMU to run alongside the the green 4CEP.

I'm praying for a retooled 91 but I'm not expecting much, besides that a retooled 90 or 158 would be nice but again unrealistic. Maybe some more DBSO's and Mk2s in anglia?

A 25 with sound please and in BR Green

Some plank or Mineral wagon with NEM Pockets please as I am fed converting old stock to NEM's with the Dapol kits

And enough of a production run of the next sound fitted steam loco so us mere mortal stand a chance of owning one, unlike the Castle were most were destined to sit out the life in silence in collectors collections

Given we've yet to see any DBSOs I'm dubious we'll get new liveries.

I desperately cling to the idea they'll downsize the IPA car carriers, even though they've said they won't! Likewise would really like a new 90 and the shrink day to be pointed at the MPV.

I imagine we'll get a whole heap of disappointment and 'consolidation'.

As well as there being no LNER tanks there are also no SR 4-6-0s, how about an Arthur, Nelson, S15 or
H 15; to follow the N 2-6-0 it shouldn't be difficult to come up with a U class, N1  or U1.

To move into the "wishful thinking" mode SR classes G6 0-6-0T, G16 4-8-0T, H16 4-6-2T or W 2-6-4T, Z 0-8-0T &  Q class 0-6-0 ; I'll leave hoping for more ex LSWR 4-4-0s to Union Mills.

Electrostars, Thumpers ?

I predict mostly reliveries of existing items plus more premium editions like the sound fitted 40. Probably no more than 8-10 new toolings, and those will wherever possible reuse existing parts and/or are in the 4mm range but not produced by anyone in N.

I'd guess:

Steam Locos:
A new version of an ex-Poole loco - probably the Crab though the Compound would be an outside bet. Both would reuse the Fowler Tender from the 4F.
If any thing completely new, I'd guess either a Southern 4-6-0 (are there any that could reuse the tender from the N?) or an LNER K1/3/4 2-6-0 (whichever one it is they do in 00).
I'd like to see the Ivatt 'Flying Pig' 4MT 2-6-0 shrunk down but is it sufficiently different to the BR Standard 4 to sell enough?

Diesel locos:
The only long-lived type now missing to modern standards is the 50 which they are unlikely to risk given the on-off-on-off Dapol saga, so anything new would have to be more 'niche'. The LMS Twins mentioned above are an obvious one as they do them in 00, plus lasted longer, carried more liveries and wandered further than most other early prototypes.

DMUs:
Probably been long enough now since the 101 to consider another transition era DMU. Almost certain to be another short-frame (57ft) unit to utilise existing parts. the 105 is the obvious one being a recent release in 00, the outside chance is the 110 if they choose to do in both scales with the existing Hornby 00 model being rather long in the tooth. Long shot a 117 - they do it in 00 but it's a long frame unit and Dapol do the single car (121) equivalent.
A modern DMU is also a possibility - consensus is the 4mm "Networker" (165/166) is in need of an upgrade so maybe do it in N at the same time?

I doubt anything Electric will be risked at the moment given the seemingly slow moving 350s and Revolution struggling with their proposed 320.

Coaches - I think a completely new type is highly unlikely at the moment, we'll only get additions to existing ranges. I'd like to see the 60 & 64ft length coaches added to the Stanier range (we STILL don't have the most common type - the 60ft CK) but I doubt that will happen. I think more likely is the few remaining missing types in the MK1, Hawksworth & Bullied ranges that fit the existing chassis.

Wagons - engineers types seem to be the flavour of the month.

Rather looking forward to tomorrow's announcements. Being an early to mid 90s modeller, loco's 'off the shelf' have been few and far between over the years for me, and the ones that have been useful to myself have come in very handy for personalising such as renumbering etc without the hassle of full resprays e.g Trainload 37's, 60's etc.

Personally I am still eagerly awaiting the release of the refurbished class 31's. A couple of the Petroleum model's are on my list to be re branded / re numbered as Coal, as well as 47209 in old RFD and IC Mainline 47550 which were announced last year. Oh and 37068! Plenty of renumbering options for these also the Network Rail Class 31, which will be stripped and resprayed into Regional Railways and another in IC Mainline. I doubt very much we will see a Regional or IC Mainline class 31 anytime soon, as the new models are not even out yet, so surly they cannot be offering new livery's for these before the new model is even out.

As mentioned many a time, a brand new class 87, 90 and 91 are a must! Personally I'd love to see a class 85 and 89 released RTR in 2mm and the class 158 updated. Pie in the sky asking for a class 304 and 310, or maybe even a 323? A cut away cab 47 will certainly make my life a little easier. later RFD examples can easily be modelled then also ILRA XC 47/8's and RES 47/7's.

Coaches. Well for me being an avid Midlands and North West West modeller, it has to be the Mk2a's in Regional Railways livery! Gave up waiting to be fair and currently got 5 of the new re tooled examples stripped on my bench ready to respray...You watch, they will be announced tomorrow  But when you think about it, with the Regional Railways Mk1's still in stock, this is another doubtful speculation. Mk2 Air Cons would be nice - oh hang on a minute...

Guess we will just have to wait and see...

Lets all hope we get a little something :NGaugersRule:

Cheers
Anthony

That would have to be a new tooling though, not just a re-livery of the current model... The current model is strictly a de-streamlined example which can only legitimately wear LMS Post-war Black or BR liveries. There are significant visual differences to the examples that were never streamlined...

At least I predicted the "Crewe cut" 47s, but wasn't expecting a 158 to be announced this year.

Considering how many class 350s remain unsold and at bargain prices, I wasn't expecting the class 450 version to appear, in a livery that'll disappear quite soon.

It'll be interesting how many takers there'll be for the Midland Pullman in reversed blue/grey livery.

The chassis was already available (47/7 with extended range tank)
The cut away bufferbeam will hardly be noticeable

However, the article suggests three nose / accessory versions
Multiple working
RCH cables (one or two)
Not all the 47/8 had cut away bufferbeams
Reference will have to be made to photos for conversions

It most certainly is noticeable. Yes i Know not all had cut away cabs, but most did post 1992, and for the era I model and the ones I want to model, all had cut away cabs and long range tanks. So this just makes my life a lot easier.

The 450s are due to undergo refurbishment from this year with the first set due out in summer, so SWR livery may appear RTR in 2019. There is at least one SWT-liveried unit carrying the SWR branding.

There is a retooled 25/3 appearing on OO this year, so hopefully this will get the shrink ray for next year as well.

I'm delighted to see the 158 finally getting retooled and hope an Regional Railways Express version is on the cards.

Now we need to wait for the full list of new liveries and prices.

Hear hear for EXPRESS / Regional branding.

Cheers
Anthony

That will be just me then :)
I think it looks lovely in that livery. I sold my Midland BP a while back, as i tried to consolidate to a particular era and region, so will be happy to re-buy it in reversed blue grey... with the money saved from not buying Dapol's (probably cancelled?) prototype HST.

Indeed Roy, indeed. But there is another run of n classes possibly one southern green but sadly for me dcc sound so out of budget or need.
Graham
I read it as provision for sound, not that it would only be available with sound fitted.  Lovely loco though.

That's how I read it too. And it's the only one that I would be tempted buy out of that lot.

It's out!

Was it really worth a 'special' announcement?

Let's hope the 'independants' have a good year. I'll save my excitement for my Class B's and the NGS shunters.

Oh, and you guys got me all excited that there might be a Crab or a Compound. At least I don't have to set aside money for more locos this year, and I can get on with building the layout. As others have said, it didn't seem worth a special announcement.

Maybe it is a spoiler for the Hornby N range being announced tomorrow. :-)

I'm quite pleased with the announcement. I'm committed to some spend such as the DJM King, class B tankers and some hand made especially for me signals so I'm glad there is nothing in the news from Farish to tempt me to spend more.

For just the loco selection its a good start, and I can see a number of potential purchases including the N class with sound.  I also know a few people who will be very happy with the Western Pullman.

No rolling stock or building announcements yet perhaps that's where the magic is.

Big let down full stop!

The only upside I can see in this is that it cracks the door open more for the likes of Revolution, DJM and others.

Every time we have the conversation of "What's coming next?" the same hopes are expressed on this forum, LMS Twins is just one example, sooner or later the "big" guys are going to start losing ground as smaller manufacturers/suppliers get more comfortable with producing relatively lucrative products for the slightly less main stream. I guess BachFar and Dapol have to look at a sizeable return before they commit to anything major.

Come on the little guy.

Nope but all those western region fans will be silenced with maroon Hawksworth coaches  :D

Personally I'll take the chocolate and cream mk1 SK.
