Title: "Forbidden" message when viewing topics
Post by: DELETED on November 09, 2016, 09:30:17 PM
Hello,

I noticed it's not been mentioned so far but for about a week now I am continously getting "Forbidden" messages when trying to look at any forum posts.  99.99% of the time I'm not logged-in when browsing the forum and this is happening on two systems:  Home laptop -win 8.1 with latest firefox, at work on desktop with win 10 with latest firefox -both set-ups on completely separate ISP's and connections, not dependent on time of day either.  Cookies, history and caches etc. cleared as per usual quick fix.

Is anyone else getting this?....

Cheers,

Rich

I've had that once I think in the last two weeks, and I am getting other odd behaviour that is also both perplexing and irritating:
Twice now when posting on a thread - one I started myself - when I tried to 'Post' the screen returned with "Bad request.....". Backpaging took me back to the posting page with my text entry still there, but the 'Post' button was now inoperative.

By copying and pasting my text into a new reply page, after closing and reopening the Forum, I got the message posted, but I'm concerned there is something flakey.
I'm using an iPad and have zero trouble on any other website, and like you Rich I have done all the usual housekeeping.

This maybe unrelated to the Forbidden issue, but I thought I'd mention it in case the Techies think it is linked.

Hi

I've had that forbidden message too about three times in the last seven days or so too.Never had it before that. I didn't really pay much attention of it until you mentioned it, like you I only log in occasionally. Going back seems to clear the problem. No pattern to it that I can see.

I have had the message once. I normally keep automatically logged in. It hasn't happened since.

Despite my 'Opera' system and the forum just not getting on at all, I have not encountered that message and I use the forum more than most :hmmm:

I've never had it either, but I also stay logged on. We had problems a while back with 502 script errors, but I guess if more reports come in of members with a similar problem, our tech Paul will investigate.

As NPN said I also use the Forum a lot I had one message forbidden and one instance similar to daffy where I started to write a post and when I went to press the post button I also got BAD REQUEST I put it down to me or my IPad which is now well worn and is over three years old so I'm due a new one.
This only happened once last week. I had forgotten about it .

I was just posting a reply about Ged's recent video on my Galaxy Tab 3 when I got a message saying a network error occurred,  but I think that was probably a local thing between my WiFi and the device. Luckily I'd copied the post, and when I did a refresh, pasted it into the newpage and got it away fine.

I'm always logged in when I'm browsing or posting - only log out when I cache clean every few days - so my Forbidden notice was maybe just one of those Q.i. type "nobody knows" things.

As for Bad Requests, all is operating fine at the moment so I shall wait until it happens again (if it happens again) to copy the full error page to see exactly what it said. But for now, I'm happy. Thanks Only Me.

@RST (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=4208) Bit of irony here, Photobucket where you have posted your picture is "forbidden to me" at work so unless you can post the photo in the forum gallery I cant look at the error sorry !

..Ah, sorry -thought I was being smart by doing a screen dump so it was exactly so.  I remember in old works where websites used to get blocked but we don't have any of those IT blocks at my work now (IT guy loves it -do whatever you like with your PC but don't break it 8)).

The "forbidden message is happening all over but I have a suspicion it's pretty much on any thread containing images on here as the wording of it is almost the same as the message you get when you click on a picture where someone has uploaded to the gallery rather than weblinked to their own storage (e.g. photobucket, flikr, dropboxx all display fine -but forum images I'd say it's less than a 50% success rate).  Actually I find allot of the time the gallery pictures work for a day or so then on the third day default to "forbidden -you do not have permission to access" but that's another story :confused1:

If it helps, the message I "screenshotted" is...

"Forbidden (in bold times new roman)

You don't have permission to access /SMFN/index.php on this server."

It is very similar to 403 forbidden messages when I was internet searching today.  I'll keep clearing my cookies etc. and hope it goes away because it's happening just about every post I click on on either computer.  Staying logged in doesn't work -I use private browsing for any website requiring a password but it happens when not using private browsing also.

Could it be a firefox bug?  I notice it's dropped out flash player again this past 2 weeks and you have to re-activate it again (I know some folk don't like flash etc.).

Cheers,

Rich

Couldn't even log on earlier tonight without getting the 'Forbidden 403' message.
Tried Opera, IE and then downloaded Firefox and all gave me the same message.

Eeeek! About 20 mins ago, I had my first Forbidden message while I was replying to bbdave's layout post. I logged out, and then tried logging back in again, and couldn't even do that. Forbidden again!!

Then I tried my tablet, Forbidden.

Phone, Forbidden.

It's working again now, obviously. But it appears that something strange is going on!  :hmmm:

I don't think it has, sorry to say.
Up until today never had the message and had been on the forum on and off all morning but then wanted to post a reply and got the message.
I couldn't look at anything on the forum without getting this message.
I had been logged on and posting without issue before the problem .

Only way I could get back on was to completely shut my laptop down and restart.

Testing testing testing......

If this reply goes through okay, my iPad is fine, as it has been for the last few days.

If it doesn't, you're not reading this. ;)

Hi

I still seem to be getting the forbidden message too, I had it once yesterday early and once this morning too. I thought I was going to just get it again as it flashed up but it vanished. I seem to have to exit and reload the site to get rid of it.

I had it yesterday morning and couldn't log back in. Even rebooting the computer didn't solve the problem.

Suddenly in the afternoon everything was OK.

When I use Google Chrome (on PC with Windows 7 and on an Android Tablet) I also get the "forbidden" message.
Strange thing is when using the Windows Internet Explorer I have no problems at all, just have to remember to use it instead of Google Chrome.

Had it maybe 20 times this lunch time -could not look at any forum posts at all.  Also when the forum loads it brings up the "short" list of few posts -I usually explore them then go to the "forum" tag and scroll to the bottom for the bigger new post list (the "forum" tag and strangely some of the mailbox tags when logged in are usually always missing which I think is due to ABP but I know where the buttons are now!) and it wouldn't let me load the forum proper either.  To be fair it may be a Firefox issue.  I've been having problems accessing via my tablet but that's affecting BBC news and RMWEB also -you just can't click on any links (andriod but some unrememberable system like lollipop stick or something like that).  RMWEB went through a "forbidden" page via windows but only maybe lasted 48hrs on PC about 10 days ago.  Everything PC-wise seems to be going through massive updates again at the moment though.  Andriod I cannot figure out at all after years of perseverance so it just does what it does.

By the way, I have 2 emails from NGF for this -one saying "thread deleted," then another saying "thread moved" -but everything seems the same?  I got no PM's??

I'm finishing a full back up of the forum as we speak.  I had to download 24GB overnight. :o

Only Me is kindly giving up his time to upgrade the forum and sort this problem out.  I'm sure there'll be lots of headbanging...   :headbutt:    ;D

Whatever the issue causing the glitches @Only Me (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=1328), I wish you good luck with the update, and thanks for the effort and time it is costing you.

I just hope that as you press the 'Update' button you don't get

Forbidden: You do not have permission to access Update on this server"

We all know it will bomb :D, nothing as straight forward as going up in code by three complete SMF versions in one go   :o

During the upgrade the forum will be in maintenance mode.. You have been warned  :P

PS a google of 403 Forbidden error message would seem to show that it's not just this forum having issues, It's appearing all over the web, so based on this I would think something in a pushed browser update to do with security.

Hi, yes -on other sites I was getting a 403 as part of the message but didn't realise the 403 was stated in a little tab at the top on NGF pages instead

I hope your updating day went better then mine!  I see normality again reading things this evening :) so sounds like it did!

Sorry, my computer went a bt slow and this got posted in another part of the forum.  Am about to correct...

I still get allot of 403 errors from NGF, but nothing like before.

Opera Browser?  I had to use it on raspblackberries years ago, terrible on them and glad to ditch it since as a browser.  It was so amazingly slow and never displayed things quite right.  I thought it had been ditched years ago but maybe not ???

Oh man, what is it with this forum that keeps giving "forbidden" messages all the time?  It's the only place on the web I look which keeps turning this error up every time -from at least 3 different computers (and once when I visit the site, then I leave and an hour later I get the same error message again)!!!!???

Not on a VPN, just a shared server.

I agree with 'Only Me', there should be no need to hide ones activities when it comes to train matters ............. the fact that I paid for a Class 08 from ebay last night whilst SWMBO was in the bath was just a coincidence!  :worried:  ;)

Yup, I use a VPN (not in private browsing mode), but was still getting it at random when viewing mobile away from wifi (so potentially random 3 mobile IP address).

It's the inaccurate "Your computer has been infected with a virus" message that's most annoying. It's a bit close to the fake virus killer stuff you get online. While it's possible that one of the computers that may have used that IP address in the past was a spammer or infected with a virus, it's a false positive stating that anyone who connects with that IP address is.

....sorry, it's nothing to "hide" as such but something I have done for years ever since an account got hacked and left a bit of a mess afterwards.  Anything requiring a log-in anywhere gets done through private browsing amongst other things ever since.  Never been a problem before until I first posted here (and no problem anywhere else).  I just got blocked replying to a post also which is a first but of course hitting back deleted my entry LoL.  Perhaps I am being overly cautious, obviously latest ngaugeforum software 'tinternet just won't work with my out-dated philospohy now and I need to relax it a bit

With regards to the above thread I seem to be permanently "forbidden" whatever I try on any occasion from any PC.  Only to say it seems a little ignorant not to reply with at least a thankyou for the pointers.  I still get "forbidden" on lots of forum stuff -from any PC, but I'd like to get a message across somehow to that thread I've been trying to reply for weeks.  I thought it was because I was replying with pics but apparently not.

Cheers,

Rich
