The NEM662 Next18 standard opens up a whole new way of installing sound decoders but there is very little info available and what there is can be a little confusing so here is my effort to help sort out the different types of connectors.

The Next18 sockets are available in 2 basic types, the small (K) with 12 breakout terminals and the large (or grand) with 15 breakout terminals.  The large (G) is dedicated for sound installs but the smaller (K) version can also be used for sound installs with most Next18 sound decoders but double check first before you use the small for sound install.

With the help of our adapter N18-K you can freely wire our sound decoder SD18A in your model. You benefit from a secure, pluggable connection, which allows easy replacement of the decoder at any time. All connection wires are on the adapter - there are no more wires from the decoder to the model. Preparation Before installation, the locomotive must be checked for perfect electrical and mechanical condition. Defects or contamination must be removed before installation. Basically, the specifications of the locomotive manufacturer are to be observed. For new locomotives it is recommended to drive the locomotive in each direction for half an hour. If desired, you can use the AUX1 and AUX2 connectors to connect two additional loads to the connection adapter. As a return conductor for the LV, LR, AUX1 and AUX2 function outputs, you can use either a rail connection (G1 or G2) or alternatively the common return conductor (VS, carries up to 30 volts). An additional buffer capacitor with a charging circuit can be connected to the GND and VS connections, if desired.

Thanks for posting the info. I'm still trying to get my head around the six pin chips. Will they be made obsolete by these?

I think the 6 pin will be around for quite a while yet as it fits locos where no other decoder can go, the Next18 makes it easier for manufactures to build in a decoder socket.

Thanks for that, I thought of trying a next 18 decoder for a 'snug' sound install and this saves me loads of work

Each pin is rated at 0.5 amp. Track pins are duplicated to provide 1amp rating

The layout of the pins is such that if the chip is inserted the wrong way round no damage will be caused.

For sound decoders pin 7 (aux6) is loudspeaker B and pin 16 (aux5) is loudspeaker A

I'd be a bit worried about the soldering of the wires to those sockets in the images - the insulation has melted back on a few of the connections, and black/red look shorted together on the 15 way socket!

Would agree, the soldering is not very good and that pic was from the manufacturer's website but in their defence, the supplied sockets were wired perfectly ok.

Here's a pic of the pin out for the actual plug/socket with all the important ones doubled up (Rail left, rail right, Com+, ground) which means even if you fit the decoder the wrong way round it won't blow it, just not work properly, a bit like the current 6 pin version
