Stevenage & District MRC new N gauge layout
« on: December 15, 2015, 08:25:18 pm »
Here are some pictures of the new N gauge layout the club I'm a member of is currently building.

7 feet by 4, using Kato track, it'll be modelled to allow steam and modern trains to run in a hopefully believable setting. A station with bi-directional central platform road and small yard one side, with pastoral setting for loops that will be a scenic fiddle yard the other side.

The plan should allow 3 trains to run at any one time, which should keep the small band of N Gauge modellers busy for the time being. Brian has cracked on with the boards and set out the Kato track in his garage to test the plan. Hopefully it will be transferred to the club house before Xmas.

Nice project. I'm just up the A1 from you in North Herts. Hope to see it one day when it is finished!

I should mention the plan of the layout was done by @PostModN66 of this Parish. It's nicely flexible for a club layout and some test running/playing, but also perfectly easy to run prototypically if the mood takes us. When I get my desktop back from the repair shop I'll post the plan!

Today we cut a hole in the wall to install the new layout into it's new position in the club room.

There are joining pieces to bridge the wall. These will allow the two sides to be detached and re-joined directly to each other if we wish to take the layout out on the road.

The next two pictures show the other side of the wall, with wiring being temporarily connected up pending the building of a control panel.

A closer picture of the small joining piece in the tunnel.

Two views of the layout in situ with test running taking place. The installation went went smoothly, with four main boards and the small and large joining pieces fitting together well. Testimony to the quality of Brian's work (who is pictured here with my son Callum).

A period of running trains over Christmas and New Year is on the cards now to whet people's appetites for the wiring and scenery work to follow.

I've recently had the chance to do a bit of test running, although we only have the two running lines temporarily wired up awaiting the construction of the control panel.

Hoping to recruit a few to the N gauge cause by running some decent length trains.....

Any problems with the #4 points?

Cheers  Jon  :)

A few. Where we have had derailments, they have almost always occurred at #4 points. Although light stock, back to backs and other issues may well be the cause yet...

This layout has made great strides in the last year, and will feature at the CMRA show in Stevenage this weekend.
