NGS Kit 54a KSA Rover "Cube" wagon
« on: September 20, 2014, 10:03:26 am »

Hello all,

Just a quick update on progress with the NGS's latest kit, the original "cube" variant of the KSA wagon.

Bernard Taylor is making progress on producing the master as can be seen - the main body has been fabricated in plasticard and etched brass.

There is still work to be done, and a fair amount of detail to be added, but the basic proportions and shape are there.  The interior of the wagon also needs building up to make sure it's easy to mould.  This kit is numbered 54a (Code NGSK0540) and will include one-piece plastic moulded bogies and etched details.

The prototype vans were built in the 1990s in Finland to carry Rover car spares between plants, and often hauled by pairs of Railfreight Distribution Class 47s.  After Rover traffic declined, a small number were acquired by Scottish logistics firm W H Malcolm and used on Anglo Scottish intermodal services, usually hauled by DRS Class 37s or Class 66s.

In recent years some of the wagons have had the body removed and been converted to timber carriers; these are already available as NGS kit 54b (NGSK0541).

cheers

Ben A.

Any Idea when this will be available, I would like to order a couple as thinking for my layout would be perfect for a couple of forgotten wagon's from when Rover stopped trading sort of speak. As not knowing alot about railways in general I'll think a little further read up is in order

Hello Denemarken,

I'm hoping the mastering will be complete soon, and as soon as that's done, and the master has been proved for casting, the kit will be available.  All other parts and decals have been completed - we're just waiting for the main van body.

A large number of these wagons have been stored for some time alongside the railway at wash wood Heath in Birmingham - I think many are still there.

Cheers

Ben A.

Hi Ben, Thank you for posting this or I would have missed it, Never built any wagon before but this one has wet the appetite for building. Would you mind updating this thread when they are available I'll try and find out myself but just incase  :beers:

Looking on the internet now for some photo's of the Rover wagon's think couple of these in a siding would look nice, all weathered and left to ( Unfortunatley ) rust away

Hi ,
Thanks for update, Bernard`s work top notch as always - got some on order. Other than the dozen or so converted for timber all rusting in tree overgrown sidings at Washwood Heath- seemingly secure but the amount of graffiti on them does mean the rusting process has slowed somewhat !

There were are about 70 of them stored in washwood Heath yard until recently.

26 of them are sitting 90 degrees to tracks.

Nigel

There is nothing new to report at the moment.  Ben or I will make sure that here and the NGS website are updated as soon as we have more news.

Best wishes

Mike

We're getting closer to the completion of this long-awaited kit project - I've just put a brief update on the NGS website here.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi ,
This is really good news I am tempted to get 10 in one shot as they are signature wagons from my youth at Saltley depot on Swindon - Longbridge car parts trains - double headed 47s just to ensure we got home / delivered goods on time by any route.

Master does look the part - thanks to Bernard I guess, all good things come to those who wait!
thanks Mike

Hi Robert,

I believe the castings have been supplied.

I think these models may may be waiting their turn in the kit packing queue, and there may be other components that the kit packing team still need to get their hands on.

I think they are doing their best but the kit packing operation is phenomenally complex - many kits have small or individual parts and locating bags of small castings, or sheets of etches, linking them to particular kits and then confirming all the parts for any given kit are there ready for packing is a significant undertaking.

Cheers

Ben A.
