Title: Uploading Pictures
Post by: guest1328 on July 12, 2016, 02:44:15 PM
In order to add photos to the forum, every user has their own photo directory for which you may upload photos (not videos) to.
To add photos to the forum, click "Gallery" from the menu bar at the top of the main page.

Once the page changes, Click on "My Gallery" from the link

Now you can create an album in your gallery, by clicking the "Add Category" button

Put in a title for your album and then click the "Add Category" button

You will now be returned to your gallery and see you have a new album, Click on your album name to enter the album.

Now you can add a single picture by clicking on the "Add Picture" button

Enter in a name for your picture (you cannot use special characters or quotes, only numbers, letters spaces etc) and click the select box to select the picture you want to upload.  Once this is complete click the "Add Picture" button.

or add multiple pictures using drag and drop / select by clicking the "Bulk Add Pictures" button the pictures will automatically upload when you drop the images over the area displayed.

@Only Me (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=1328) - excellent post, thank you, that's helped me with loading images into galleries. Is there a way of moving photos from one category to another? E.g. I have some photos in "My Gallery" default I could now move to a category folder, how do I do that?

Ditto. Many thanks for the great explanation.

@DarrwestLU6 (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=6745)
If you go to the gallery your pic is currently in you will see beneath the pic the option to 'Edit' the pic.
Click on that and at the bottom of the next page you will see move options like 'Copy item to another category'

Hi all - I'm having some problems with Gallery upload - what I am doing wrong?
1 - I created a new Album
2 - then selected bulk upload - dropped photos in and got the tick on all 4 I wanted to load, so looked OK.
3 - then I went to another folder to check they were loaded - but only 1 went in.

I've now had to resize the photos and add one by one and this works.
So why does bulk upload fail when I get a tick?

I don't know at what point you resized your pics but providing they are under 2MB you should be able to use the bulk upload, as I did that just this morning. If your pics were over 2MB when you first loaded them to your gallery anything oversize seems to get a tick and then just not appear. :confused2:

I've just had a whinge about this issue on the problems thread:

https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=44954.msg562751#msg562751 (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=44954.msg562751#msg562751)

It has been a problem to me for a while now, and I'm obviously not alone. I know nothing about the technicalities but it seems to me that when the whole world is pasting shots of any man and his dog on social media, we should be able to take a pic, and post it on the NGF without getting invalid messages, or having to fiddle around resizing, or going to other parties such as Flickr, etc.

Rant over.

And yes, me ankle still hurts.  :D

I've successfully uploaded a group of 7 pics to a named folder within 'My Gallery'. I want to create a new post in the layout construction category and attach all 7 images - how do I do that please? Thanks very much.

I open two windows, one with my post, and the other with my gallery.

Get the pic up in your gallery, scan down and copy the BCC code.

Flick back to your post, and paste it there.

Ok that's one at a time, but I like posted text between pics.

Just a warning: if you try to load pictures by using Gallery>Add picture you will see a warning notice that the max size for a picture is 7.81Mb.  That is out-of-date and the limit is 2Mb.

Posting straight from phone without all the resizing palaver is still an issue which remains unaddressed.

Yeah but isn't that a problem with the file size the phone creates, rather than a problem with the forum as such?

On various global adventures up until last year, I could post pictures on this forum almost after they were taken.

Can't do that now.

That's all I'm saying.

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Last night I tried to upload some photos to my folder "Southwark Bridge".

The first time I tried it I was told they had all been uploaded (Nice big ticks), never to be seen again.

I tried again, did everything really slowly, made sure they were directed to the correct folder. Yes! They appeared, so I posted in my "Southwark Bridge" layout thread. Everything worked fine so I went to bed happy.

This morning they are nowhere to be found in my gallery, it seems they prefer it in "random".

Help, please  :helpneededsign:

@grahamb im sorry to say that they will only appear in the Random gallery if specific user folder has not been selected.  If you use bulk upload button its a lot easier.
That's exactly the problem, I did use bulk upload and I did select the folder. I took great care to do that but there must have been something I missed.

If you do a bulk upload then select another photo it will default to random gallery, I've moved them now into your gallery for you, you may need to relink any post you made for them

Regards
Thank you. I can now see them in "My Gallery" and, oddly, the links still work. I'm now on a mission and trying to sort out my galleries. How do I move the photos from "My Gallery" into "Southwark Bridge" gallery please? I've got some in a sub folder to Southbridge that I want to move into the new "parent" Southwark Bridge folder?

Is there ANYTHING we can do to make things clearer for forum newbies? In the past couple of days there have been 2 new members both trying to use the PDF functionality ** on the same thread** !!

https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=49721.0 (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=49721.0)

I'm not sure why, is it just that the "Add image and post to gallery" option isn't obvious enough and needs highlighting? People are seeing the "Attachments and other options" stuff which is for PDFs and trying to use that.   To be fair, I think the other forums I frequent all add images via the Attachments options below the text box.

I agree, it's a bit of a mess.  We've had three lots of 'galleries' on this forum and they've all messed up in one way or another.   :'(

It's very hard, once a gallery has been started, to convert it to the new one and being able to transfer the photo's and all of the information with them.  Most of the developers don't seem to do things just how I want it, and it's incredibly hard to talk to them.....so I haven't for some time.  I'll see if I can get something changed again on here.

Can you all tell me what you'd like changed, and I'll make a note.   :thankyousign:

Just a thought or two, that may help;

1) Move the link "Add image to post and upload to gallery" to below the text entry box so that both image and attachment links are close to each other.  Having them above and below the text entry box almost invites people to miss the images link and select the attachments one.

2) Add a note to the "Attachments and other options" bit to clarify that it's not for images, maybe simply saying "PDFs, etc."

We could just do away with the Gallery entirely - then @rogerdB (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=6299)  would not be able to show any more of his superb pictures!  ;)

(Only joking Roger)

Hi

I know there are ways to get photos into posts but I'm blowed if I can do it. I did a post today on stuff on my workbench and took a photo on my ipad. I had to change it to a pdf before it would load into the post but then it doesnt actually show, just has a link to it. I know photosd can be seen in posts as many do it all the time! I then read the somewhat long thread from the front page and realised the key link was the last post..... I then created a gallery, and uploaded the pic (This time in jpeg as pdf aren't allowed in the gallery) but I still can't get the blooming thing into my post!

What am I doing wrong? I'm no computer numpty and this thing has me beat!

If you have got as far as loading a picture into your gallery - you are on the home straight! Click on your picture in the gallery and when it loads, look for the BB Code towards the bottom of the page. Then copy the whole BB Code and paste it into your post.

addit: The bit you want begins [img and ends img] and you need it all, including the [ at the beginning and ] at the end.

As @dannyboy (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=4209) says if you've managed to get the piccie into your gallery then just need to find that piccie, scroll to the BBCode link and copy that into your post.

@Southerngooner (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=3680)  If you were being forced to use pdfs you must have been trying to use "attachments and other options" link? Loads of people get caught out by that, this forum has a non-standard way of adding piccies.

The quicker way to add a new image to a post is to use "Add image to post and upload to gallery" link which is right above the text box where you write your post  :)

Upload the piccie either as a random photo or to your user gallery, and it should plug the BB code into the text for you. That's the way I do it unless I'm plugging in a piccie I've used before and which is already in the gallery.

Easy when you know how........

It does get confusing though, but I've seen the amount of posts in these threads and appreciate its a lot of work for the mods to make things easier.

Thanks for the help guys!

My preferred method as I have umpteen galleries so it's easier to find things.
It also helps the forum capacity if pics are resized to 1MB or less before uploading. I do this in 'Paint'

the easiest way to load a photo is to use Gallery/upload multple items - it works for singles as well, and is drag'n drop

then click on My Images, double click on your picture, and copy all of the BB code into a message ( as above)

Simples!

Not that simple on a phone/tablet IMO. Adding at the time of posting is easier. I still don't think it's overly intuitive.

@Foxhound it's just you  :D   :D

For me it's working just as well as before, except there was a problem with the "Add image to post and upload to gallery" refusing to redirect back to the original post and inserting the BB code.  As noted in the Forum Issues thread.

For anyone who wants cut the sizes of their images down without using paint or the like. VSO Image Resizer4 works well for Windows computers W10/W11, its a free download.
