Well, I had a bit of a Dapol weekend:

The 56 was inspired by Bruce, amongst others, and the HST was the result of a number of saved searches on ebay.

It turns out, however, that both have their shortcomings.

The 56 will not go round my test track without derailing. I think it's just objecting to the 9" set track curves - does anyone know the minimum radius it'll go round? There's nothing in the instructions, but I seem to recall that R2 (whatever that is) is specified as the min for quite a lot of stuff.

And the HST: well, where to start. But the main problem is that someone has been inside and rewired it, so that the unpowered car short circuits. The/a previous owner had put insulation tape over the bogie contacts to make it useable, but I think it's going to have to go and see a specialist at some point soon.

I'm not sending it back, because it's exactly what I want, so will just have to fix it. The headlights don't work on the powered car either, so that'll need looking at too.

@Yet_Another  I have just acquired a Dapol 56. My test (Kato) track is a 4' x 2' oval with a passing track. One of the pieces in the passing track is the tight radius, (sorry I do not the radius off hand - will look it up a bit later), curve and the 56 derails if using that piece, so they obviously do not like tight radii! It runs beautifully on the outer oval.

I used to be indecisive - now I'm not - I don't think.

I am very surprised that a bogie diesel won't go round 9", it must have a poor bogie turning circle?    R2 minimum is usually a restriction for  larger steam locos especially those with shaft drive and/or full size front bogie wheels behind cylinders.

If the likes of Fleischmann or Minitrix etc. were to make a model with such restrictions there would be an outcry, given that both firms' minimum radius is less than 9".

Thanks @dannyboy , I'm glad it's not just mine!

I can't find anything on the Dapol website concerning the tech spec of these (or any other) locos.

As far as I could tell last night, it was the wheelbase of the bogie that was popping off, rather than a restriction in its rotation.

TBH, it's not a problem operationally, as I won't have anything this tight on the layout. Just a bit annoying and as far as I can tell undocumented.

Ref Dapol Class 56 and 1st Rad; none of my three de-rail on this radius.

In fact, I don't have a locomotive in my fleet (90s Farish to latest Farish and Dapol) that does.

I am afraid to say it seems random (and apparently I have been lucky).

Which is still very odd, given that the wheelbase of a bogie is the same or less than a typical 0-6-0 loco.   Maybe a twist in the track and not enough slack in the bogie pivots?

Here's my latest acquisition... definitely a "Rule 1" purchase but I love Panniers and have happy memories of seeing LT-liveried versions operating on both the South Devon and Paignton & Dartmouth railways last summer!

Would be VERY rule 1 for me, but I do very much approve. I have been captivated by LT Panniers ever since I was allowed onto the footplate of one as a boy at (I think) the Bluebell.

Definitely not a twist in the track - it will do it on any of the four corners of my running in oval, which is laid on a completely flat board.

I can't find any minimum radius spec for this loco, so I've written to Dapol.

That's a lovely model. And there is something attractive about the LT livery.

A very good rule 1 purchase!

A couple of new purchases recently.

A nice BR green Class 04 diesel

A 20 Ton BR Bauxite brake van

I have a couple of others still on their way, a BR green class 08, a class 25 which went away for repair in BR green also, and a BR black early crest (invoking Rule 1 a little) 9F
Will post others as they arrive.

From the angle of that front coupling I thought it had Arnold Simplex auto-couplings for a moment  :D

At the Leyland Show today I managed to snaffle an almost new Dapol 57xx pannier tank for £40 (less than the price of a Farish coach :P). It runs OK although with a bit of a limp and somehow Dapol have managed to create an 0-6-0 with a whining engine like nearly all my other Dapol locos. It may possibly quieten with running in but I have my doubts :hmmm:
