A new member with an interest in American N

Hi

It's been nearly 20 years since I owned a model railway but I intend to purchase some American N locos etc to build a small switching layout suitable for a 1 bedroom flat.

I would be interested to hear if anyone else has a micro layout. I do remember a layout called "Bart" built by Norman Raven.

Looking forward to reading items on the forum.

I'm currently more of a watcher than a doer when it comes to layout construction. But there're many a helpful soul here that'll be able to comment on small layouts - i.e. there are lots of boxfile layouts on here.

I'll be looking forward to following the conservations and your layout progress.

I dabble in US 'N' scale.  I have found that Kato locomotives are excellent.  I have a few by other manufacturers which are good but not, to my mind, as good as Kato.  If you make your first locomotive purchase a Kato one, I don't think you will be disappointed.

There is a following for switching-type layouts here and in the US.  If you have not yet heard the term, 'Shelf Layout', these can sometimes be similar to what you probably have in mind.

WH Smith stocks Model Railroader (MR) which is a good read.  It used to be really substantial but it has lost a lot of advertising over the years.  MR also produces annual publications.  Model Railroad Planning might be of interest to you.

Hi BigJ and welcome aboard.  You mentioned in your first post one of my modelling heroes, Norman Raven (and the Raven Group), he and his wife are the most amazing modellers and true inspirations, I was already into the American scene when he got me interested in Japanese (so beware!)

And of inspiration, and although not all N, have a look at http://www.amherstrail.org/ABEL/Downloads/Shelf-Layouts.pdf for ideas on small layouts.

No doubt we will all be interested in what kind of era and locale you will be modelling so, keep us posted on your progress

New track and points should arrive tomorrow and as I have a day off on Wednesday I hopefully can make a start to getting it down. Due to the limited space i intend to a sector plate as well
