Longer Shank Rapido Couplings for Farish J94
« on: February 04, 2016, 10:57:11 am »
Hi - can someone please suggest a source for longer shank Rapido couplings? Those on my Farish 94 are way too short and I'm getting fouling between buffers on tight curves.

I seem to recall that the ideal setup is for the coupler back-plate to sit ~1mm ahead of the buffers.

To answer my own question, Rapido couplings with 5mm shanks are available from Shapeways, in batches of 20 or 100:

https://www.shapeways.com/product/25PK634QK/20-rapido-coupler-5mm-shaft-n-gauge-081013?optionId=41294945

Here are 2 J94s, coupled to old design Grafar trucks. The black loco has the original couplings, and buffers will foul on tight curves; the red example has the  5mm couplings.

Shapeways also offers very short couplings and fixed drawbars for those of you with enormous tracts of layout!

Are you looking for longer NEM fitting couplings or the old T shaped with spring. If it is the former Dapol fit a long one on the class 67.

Thanks Geoff - it's the T shaped ones for old locos I needed for J94s on my colliery layout with tight curves. The spec for Rapidos was always that the back plate should align with the buffer heads, but standard length couplers fail to do that on these locos.
