Just joined NGF and stumbled across your layout.....this is certainly my kind of modelling. Great attention to detail and lots of modern traction. Loving it, well done........

I love this layout! Such great work.
Have been watching the youtube videos of it on your channel too. Really like the music you use too- can I ask; are the soundtracks your own compositions? If so- then that's a double thumbs up from me.

Hey....thanks Ross.....on both counts!   Yes, the music is my composition; glad you like it!  :D

Thanks to you as well Mustermark.  Yes - in for 9 red TEAs (may up this!!)

I will need to be getting Lofthole out of the loft shortly for an exhibition in Milton Keynes over the summer.  I have mostly been working on Deansmoor - and about to make a little video of that too!

Cheers Jon  :)

Hi Jon

Great layout and video's  :thankyousign:

How did you achieve the auto un-coupling on the Kato track work as it would appear to work brilliantly but does not seem to be covered anywhere in the post.

I know from your comments that you have gone away from using Kato track but perhaps you could do another of your excellent "how to" tutorials on this subject?

 :beers:

Hi Mick, thanks for various compliments!!

The autocoupling does work well if I say so myself!  I call it REMIT (Rare Earth Magnet in Tube) - basically a magnet on the end of a stick, pulled up by a piece of string.  In operation , not as "Heath Robinson" as the name suggests, I have some fairly neat beads on pull cords just below the edge of the layout which pulls the string via a couple of guide loops made from wire to the "stick".

The magnet just moves up under the Kato track - no modification necessary to the track.  You could use the same system with Peco, but my guess is that you would have to cut away the sleepers and put some kind of cosmetic plate on the top.

Here are some pictures to make it clearer:

For the couplers themselves, you can use Peco ELSIE couplers equipped with the lift arm, or I have modified standard sprung Rapidos to the same effect.  Because the magnet is much stronger than an electromagnet, you need a very short lift arm that fits within the coupler box.

...all this somewhat superceded now by Dapol Easi-Shunts.

Hope this is of interest!

Cheers  Jon  :)

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your comment.   :thankyousign: The old style factory building is a Walthers Allied Rail Rebuilders, the new tin shed is a Micro-Engineering "Doyle Distribution" (IIRC??!!) both bashed and detail added.  The small lab building is Kestrel, the oil terminal mess building is scratch built.

Cheers  Jon  :)

Lofthole Oil Terminal is only booked out to one model railway show this year, Shenfield on September 19th. Come and see REMIT couplers in action, Jon will almost certainly let you have a go if you ask!  ;)
