Title: Gad but it's hot, Fanshawe
Post by: Newportnobby on June 18, 2017, 04:55:19 PM
Been in the mancave this afternoon running a few locos and, by heck, it's too hot in that there conservatory even with doors and windows open. The ceiling fan just stirs hot air around.
According to my 'inside out' thermometer it's 27 degrees centigrade outside, not that they're particularly accurate.
I see the dreaded little red spider mites are out already - tiny bags of blood which you have to be very careful not to squash as they stain things badly.

I imagine if you have your layout in a loft it would be pretty unbearable up there?

Hot days like today I reserve for planning. Generally conducted in a shady part of the garden with the aid of a very cold lager or six.
Its amazing how clear the plans you've made are after the sixth beer. Just can't remember what they were the next day...

29 degrees in Farnborough Hants right now. 25 degrees indoors. Very tempted to pour a cold beer over my head!!
Min temp tonight is 17. So... The choice tonight is boil, or open the bedroom windows and suffer ear damage from the traffic. Decisions decisions....

My triple glazing  plus a NW aspect have kept it to about 22/23 here in  Bournemouth, probably a bit warmer on the beach!

We were told that the Marquee at the G C R SHOW reached 40 yesterday not sure how high it was today Plus Daughters  Dave wasnt feeling very well they packed up and went home Sunday morning
Didnt meet any members apart from willike1958.
Where did you all get to there were some very nice N gauge layouts and you could have all lost a lot of weight walking round in the heat.

I can't stand the heat. :'(  Anything above 18C and I'm not happy!  My boys had great fun in the blow up pool though and were in it all day.  :D  I have been beside the fan all day long!!!

I did manage some woodwork in the loft on Friday night, but had to stop every 15 minutes and go downstairs to cool off.  After 5 years my traverser is connected to my layout!  HURRAH!  Now I just need to wire it up.  Next year....!   ;D

28C in York apparently so I went for a fast bike ride to warm up a bit. Brrrrrrr. Felt all woozy and weird by the end for some reason despite drinking lots. Still, it was fun and very, very quiet on the melting roads around York.

The local rag has one of those tiresome lazy journalism pieces comparing York's temperature with that of other so-called hotspots. F- for effort, must try harder, you journalist lot, and "see me". Very poor.

As Alan Partridge would say, "hotter than the surface of the sun".

At Dawn this Monday Morning my house was showing 24C, but by the time I left for work at 06:00, 25C. The house has 1 brick solid walls.

Meanwhile in the Railway shed yesterday at 15:00 the inside thermometer was showing 35C+ that's with two doors open and the shed roof vent open.

We are promised more of a sea breeze today, I hope so We are only half a mile from the beach.

Now sitting in the lab at work 23C+- 05C

here in the centre centre/south of Italy is blowing a little fresh air from East, Balcan mountains...and temperature is on a pleasent 30C....but from middle of the week wil arrive the Sahara's "claw"...and I can't think about it!! :(
The house is air conditioned (the best purchase of these last three years...after trains :D)..and layout is in the cellar, always fresh and airy...

Cheers

I have been trying to work out since Saturday  how on earth  the engine room of the class thirty three that I had a cabride in at the G C R could be cooler, while actually working ,than the Marquee that the layouts and traders were in ,it reached 40 degrees on Saturday but Ithink even hotter on Sunday.

Very amusing. You guys in the UK don't know the meaning of the word 'hot'. Mind you, here in Oz the population doesn't know the meaning of the word 'cold'. I will say that it is much easier to keep warm than it is to cool off.

Agree with Webbo. When it's cold, you can always throw another jumper on, but when you're down to your skin, and still hot......  :worried:

Talking of the weather, what's the forecast for my Canberra visit on Thursday, Webbo?
Title: Re: Gad but it's hot, Fanshawe
Post by: Webbo on June 20, 2017, 04:21:35 AM
The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting: "Partly cloudy. Morning fog. Light winds". Minimum -3 C and max 13 C.  Shouldn't be too bad. Anyway, my train room in the shed has a reverse cycle air conditioner that heats it in winter and cools it in summer when necessary. George, I don't think you need to worry about suffering during your visit which I am keenly anticipating.

I've got a portable air conditioning unit which I reluctantly switched on yesterday evening whilst watching the soaps. Cooled the room down by about 3 degrees and also lowers the humidity.
Disadvantage - you have to hang the exhaust out of an open window so you get all the traffic noise.
Advantage, apart from cooling, you can't hear the soaps.
It took less than ten minutes for the room to get up to silly temperatures once the air conditioning unit was turned off. >:(

It was 28C down stairs last night, and 25 this morning, As you go upstairs you still hit a wall of heat (window up and downstairs open). I spent most of the night attempting to sleep on the sofa.

They are reporting it'll cool down a bit in our area on Wednesday, I hope so I have a 250 Mile drive on Thursday, then another 250 to Bonnie Scotland on Friday. At the moment I'm totally knackered through lack of sleep...

I am not trying to take the mickey at all, and will bow out of this discussion now, but I still find it sort of strange that you find 28 degrees hot.

I grew up in the NE of England, and recall those cold winters. They in no small way contributed to my move to the Antipodes!

Enjoy the warmth, folks.

I think its a Brit thing.
We complain when its cold
We complain when its hot
We complain when its wet
We complain when its dry
If there's nothing to complain about we get depressed and then complain about that.

Yup. I usually wear jogging bottoms but for the first time this year I decided to get my legs out and frighten passers by. Let's face it, my legs are nowhere near as bad as some of the sights around Leyland :sick2:
Trouble is, for years they have been totally sun resistant so tend to dazzle people. 8)

In my twenties I got drunk in Lyme Regis and fell asleep next to a railing. I ended up with a bright red stripey top but the legs were unaffected

George,

If you want to freeze when you come down for a visit, I can accommodate. The temperature dial on my reverse cycle in the train cave goes from 10 C to 30 C. Tell me if you will be wearing your shorts or long johns and I will accommodate.

Of course the killer in all this temperature thing is really the humidity. In Darwin (northern Australia) the temperature between winter and summer increases from 30 to 33 C, but the relative humidity varies between 60 and 99% in the two seasons. A vast difference in the comfort level results.

Well, if it's not one thing, it's another. My bout of vertigo is now but a memory, and just at the point I was ready to try some train-running the heatwave arrives. The only available spot currently for said activity is the dining room table, and said table is in the full glare of the sun until late-afternoon. Current temperature in there is around 35C. So I'm seeking sanctuary at the front of the house (about 10C cooler) and browsing model rail websites.

Tragically, the lure of buying is ever-present and I now find myself in possession of far more track than I ever anticipated, having snagged a Kato V3 sidings set  :D. Thankfully, the forecast is for cooler weather after Thursday, so this week might yet see trains run!

I'm so glad I'm no where near Leyland.
Seeing those legs might frighten me to death  :D

Isn't it strange how Forum members who have never met and live miles apart have identical thoughts. :D

I wonder how widespread this phenomena is? :hmmm:

Infamy. Infamy. They've all got it in for me :'(

I love this heat, I spend the whole time starkers! Have to put shorts on when I go out though as it might frighten the neighbors else!
Too much information - nearly spilt my beer.
You wouldn't like me if I spilt my beer...

Notice you didn't use the :photospleasesign: emoticon! :P

I am not trying to take the mickey at all, and will bow out of this discussion now, but I still find it sort of strange that you find 28 degrees hot.
Just reaching that time of year here when 28 degrees is starting to feel comparatively cool  Fortunately it rarely goes above 38 or so in the height of summer.

If it's any consolation it has been known to snow.

Don't try and over analyse it, chaps. I just remember an old cartoon of two explorers in the jungle surrounded by natives they couldn't see and one said "It's too quiet, Fanshawe, too quiet"
Blimey - people don't say 'Gad' any more either, do they?

I think its a quote from the Goons. "By gad it's hot Farquhar . Reminds me of Poona in 44."

Farquhar is one of those names that pronounces Fanshaw.

I say Carruthers, isn't that Featherstone Hough, what what? It won't do you know, it just won't do.

Reminds me of my very first job. I had to call a woman by the name of Carrot. I was firmly rebuked by her when she answered and I innocently said " Can I speak to Mrs Carrot?"
"The name is Caro my dear Caro.".
I had to put the phone down for laughing.

You could be right, Malc, as my memory is not what it used to be.

Regarding the commotion over Fanshawe, I reckon that you guys have fans on the brain.

In the heat, I am a fan of fans too.

For those of you to the west of me, I just thought I would let you know that we have just had a short sharp shower here and it is only 20 degrees - relief is on its way.

Shame, the weather tends to go from west to east in the northern hemisphere so it looks as if we are sending you even hotter!
