Hello,

I've just been thinking about the mileage my Tornado loco will have done before it gets home to my layout. China to Barwell, Barwell to Lincoln, Lincoln to Luton, Luton to Chatham, Chatham to London, London to Johannesburg.

It may very well have racked up more miles than the real Tornado.

Regards,

Veronica

China to england =5071 miles

Barwell to lincoln=63 miles

lincoln to luton=81 miles

luton to chatham=52 miles

chatham to london=34 miles

london to johannesburg=5631.50

total distance covered=10932.5 miles

not to far really  ;D

That's an intereting thought. Some of my stock already went from Made in China (via where i'm not sure) to Hattons in Liverpool and then across the Atlantic to my home in the US.  My trains are probably a bigger carbon footprint than my American muscle car!

Real Tornado, boiler made in Germany. Who knows where the steel and other bits come from?

Ah, but remember, it's an N gauge loco travelling 12"/ft scale miles.

If I remember rightly there's 5280 ft per mile which is 1,609,344 mm's.
N gauge is, I believe, 2.0625 mm/ft.
So if you multiply 1,609,344 by 10,932.5 you get 17,594,153,280 mm's.
Which is 8,530,498,560 scale feet or 1,615,624.73 scale miles.
Has the real Tornado done that already? Gosh!  :o
Don't take that as gospel though as maths was never my strong point!  :smiley-laughing:
Phew! My brain hurts now, think I'll go to bed!
Personal motto: You don't have to be mad to be a modeller, but I find it helps!

Hi,

My loco is now back home after two days spent in London, including travelling in a backpack on the Underground in subtropical conditions.

It was a relief to get back to some cooler weather in Africa - overcast and wet.

Not only do our models travel great distances, they have to deal with extremes in temperature too  :)

Regards,

Veronica.

Well I think you deserve to give it a good long run to get it settled back in  ;)

Transportation in a container ship from China to UK
The usual route is Singapore Strait, Malacca Strait, Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea, North Sea
Ironically, there are more emissions between Felixstowe and Liverpool, than between China and UK
