Must admit the Z21 looks a nice bit of kit and I notice that you can hook it up to Loconet which is the Digitrax propriety networking system so will have to look if I can incorporate the system into Claywell to give another control option.

Changing default voltage to 12v (from Roco help)

Dear Mr Robinson,

We sincerely apologize for the delay of our reply due to an increased amount of incoming correspondence.

Please try it again with the following programming-parameter-inputs in the three last lines before "Send to Z21"-button:

valid values for reset package (start) 25-255     ----> 40
(continues) 7-64                                                       ----> 10
program 6-64                                                            ----> 10

This is connected without any disadvantage!

Our Feedback:   i have installed my Z21 and can add and run locos.

however when i try and change output voltage to 12v ( for spur N), ( the only change) when i press SEND, i get an error ( i would send a screenshot but you do not allow this!)

the error message is
valid values for reset package (start) 25-255
(continues) 7-64
program 6-64

Transferring data between Z21 controllers ( ie iPad/IPhone)
 -----------------------------------------------------------/--///-//-

Go to settings (iPhone) or Export ( IPad)

The "My model railroad" setting will export all loco settings including fotos via wifi or email (open transferred file and select Z21 as preferred programme)

Resetting DCC chips
-----------------------

place the loco onto the programming track and enter CV8 then enter a value of 8. (CV8-8), this will reset your decoder to its factory default CVs values which includes its address going back to 3

Updating Z21 firmware ( Android App only as yet)
--------------------------- -----------------------------

Allows the latest firmware to be downloaded and installed on Z21 box ( IPad Apps  update themselves automatically ).

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.z21.z21fwupdate

11/10/15
I have just tried this on a borrowed Android tablet - run the app, link to the TP router and off it goes!

Takes 3 mins, so you can return the Tablet ( until next time!)

Ps this fixed a few priblems, mainly trying to read and program several recalcitrant locos, and fixes the ability to vary the output voltages.

These can now be read and programmed easily.

Setting up Consists Z21
---------------------------

This is  based around 2 settings, Traction ( loco speed/ power characteristics) and defining a "Train" Ie a consist.

Taxation is measured by creating a loop of track, and running the loco around it. The loco speed is determined at a range of controller speed settings, and the readings are entered into the Z21. It then calcipulates the sped/ voltage characteristics for the loco, and when a consist is formed, automatically matches them.

Sounds like yet another excuse for a test / running in track!

Instructions for Traction and Train settings are here ( half way down).

The Z21 automatically matches the Traction settings of the 2 locos, so that they will have identical speed settings.

http://www.z21.co.uk/articles/z21-loco-functions.html

I gleaned this from attending the Z21 lectures at Gaugemasters on Saturday - many thanks to Kevin ( ex NGS president) for his advice. -

With the black Z21 you can adjust the track voltage.
The white z21 (which i have :)) has a fixed track voltage of 18v.
Most N gauge engines will run fine on this voltage.
But not all users are feeling comfortable with this "high voltage" when using sounddecoders or 12v lightbulbs in coaches for example.
It can be reduced by using a handfull of diodes between the z21 and the tracks.

Each pair of diodes consumes 0,6v (depending on the type, i used the 1N4001).
So in this example we now have a track voltage of 18 - 4,8 = 13,2 volt.
Instead of diodes one can also use a few rectifiers.
I used this setup (first picture) for a few weeks as a test and all works flawless.

The White z21 does not support a separate programming track or loco net.

Here is a comparison table

And general information

z21 Review: Settings and Programming
--------------------------------------------/

Explanation of how to setup Z21 for N gauge voltages

https://german160.wordpress.com/2015/01/01/z21-review-settings-and-programming/

Ps - cheapest price to date: £239 ( Z21)
http://www.scograil.co.uk/roco-10820--z21-digital-control-system-2365-p.asp

Check you have the latest firmware version - this sorts out problems of the earlier versions in changing voltages / programming some locos.

There is a great "Maintenance Tool" for the Roco Z21/z21 available (http://www.z21.eu/en/Downloads).
This can be very useful for tweaking the Z21 a bit.

The screen after connecting to the controller.
Notice the IP adress, this can be changed if you want to use your own wireless router.

This screen shows the CV programming.
Much easier than typing with my large hands on my tiny smartphone :D

And we have a very nice loco controller available. This one is very precise.
The speed can be changed by mouse or using the arrow keys, 8 key strokes for each green bar in the APP.

One can even pop up more controllers and now each loco has it's own.
Tried it this morning with 3 engines (don't have more at the moment :D) it worked like a dream .
Here's a picture of 5 controllers, don't know if there is a max.
