Station building help

Hi all,
My mum at the age of 76 last week told me she wants to build a new layout that has sound as she called to replace he very nice do layout
Anyway she would like a nice station terminus building set up and I suggested the metcalf kit but she would really like the RTP style buildings this time instead of the kit built ones she has always made
Is there anything around. I've even looked at eBay but most won't post to Australia. Kicking myself now as I sold all those n scale building for the old guy a few years back!

This may be of interest.
Here is a link below to a large terminus station from Scalescenes.com. You pay for the download, by choosing from OO or N scale,then print out, glue to card and then build it yourself. would be quite a task but it would be amazing when complete.

If you want RTP, your options are somewhat limited. The Farish Scenecraft range includes (or has included) Shillingstone (S&D), Oakworth (KWVR via the LMS), as well as generic stations for the Great Central and Southern Railways. These are fairly modest buildings generally more suited to small termini or through stations. The art deco SR station could probably be rotated through 90-degrees to make a decent terminus.

Hornby offered a few stations as part of its "Lyddle End" range including Lyddle End East station. These are now out of production and would need to be tracked down 2nd hand.

There may be others but I am struggling to think of larger RPT station buildings.

Has anyone printed out the Scalescenes n gauge Staverton Station? If so what paper/card did you use plus what type of printer? Did the printed surface need sealing with varnish? If so which one.

Steve, I usually print Scalescenes onto A4 label stock with a colour laser, or for smaller buildings I can print direct to card up to 220gsm which is light to medium. For larger buildings I copy the outlines to my plotter cutter software  and let that do the hard graft of cutting heavier card, then stick the printed label onto the card.

I have not built this model but with all such downloaded card kits in N I print onto 120gsm paper and then glue this to cereal packet card (card side not shiny side) using a supermarket own brand glue stick (Pritstick). This will give you an approx finished thickness of 0.8mm. If you need to double this up then just another layer of cereal packet card shiny side to plain side, glue both mating sides and slip under your cutting mat immediately to keep it flat until it is stuck.

Use Rocket card glue for finer detail

For cutting I use a 9mm 'Snap off blade' knife for general cutting and a scalpel for finer work (door/window corners etc).

Always cut on a self healing cutting mat and not card or wood as the knife blades will blunt quicker.

You will need a steel or brass cutting edge (a plastic or wooden ruler will last less than one cut).

My printer is an HP Officejet pro 8600 plus, which is fine for up to 120gsm paper but doesn't have a rear flat feeder for heavier weight card. But the colours are true and the cartridge use is low and cost effective.

I use Winsor and Newton spray matt  varnish. You can either spray the entire printed sheet before cutting/assembly or after building is complete. Spraying before, will seal the surface and the colours will not smudge if you have damp fingers which you will have if using glue sticks as a damp cloth nearby is essential to continuously clean up your work surface.

If you are thinking of a cheap laser, Dell & Brother are good value and Most importantly have cheap toner cartridges available ( amazon / Google).

Sometimes a set of 4 carts costs more than the printer! They usually come with 750 page carts, clones are usually 2000! Get 2 sets and check that single/ 2 cart packs are available. Magenta always seems to run out first.

You will jever want to go back to an inkjet!

Printing onto A4 size labels seems to cut out the glue stick ritual.

I prefer the OKI range of colour lasers, apart from the cheapest model they will print up to 220gsm which os thin to medium card, and will also print to banner paper up to 1200m/4' ideal for back scenes. The one linked to below comes with 2K OKI cartridges and is competitively priced, considerably cheaper than the cheapest Brother from the same dealer, Dell not listed by same dealer. Yep maybe it's bigger, takes up more room, and weighs a lot more, but depends on your priorities, I don't need to carry mine around, it's fast and it's versatile.

cheap toner is the key
