Zimo sound in Class 47 by Rail Exclusive
« on: October 08, 2017, 08:25:46 am »
I've seen on the rail exclusive web site that there is a Class 47 sound pack for the Graham Farish Class 47 (ZIMO47-GF). According to the description it uses a Zimo MX648F with 8 x 12 mm sugar cube speaker with sounds by Paul Chetter.

Has anyone used this for a sound conversion? Rail Exclusive suggest significant installation work is required. I would be interested in hearing how much work would be involved.

A guide to sound installation in the 47 is here. You would need to be pretty confident with a Dremel and a soldering iron.

An MX649 direct plug in will fit without modification (other than a slight reduction in the length of the pins). You can either install a 12 x 8 sugar cube and lose cab detail at one end, or fit a larger speaker by using dremel or similar tool to remove part of metal in the boiler water tanks. I have managed to fit an 18 x 12 sugar cube, but an the 15 x 11 is pretty much as good.

Cheers,
Paul.

Thanks Paul,

That sounds like a much easier conversion.

Sorry,
Forgot to mention that I don't think Rail Exclusive offer MX649 decoders (unless they have updated their package), but other suppliers such as digi-trains and yoochoos can supply all of the components required for a conversion - MX649 and speaker basically!
