Title: Feedback about the forum
Post by: Tank on December 01, 2012, 12:42:38 PM
Hello everyone,

I've always been happy with having you all give feedback me about the forum.  As you can imagine it's very hard to keep a full time job, family life and the forum all getting my time (thank goodness for the rest of the NGF Team for doing a grand job).   If you can give your views or possible improvements for the forum then I'd be very grateful - positive or negative.  If it's too bad then Private Message me!   :smiley-laughing:

One major improvement (well, not for everyone!) will be a redesign of the Classifieds.  This will make it more user friendly - as it's just not quite right.

Thanks all,
Chris.

Great idea, Tank
In the main I think folks should concentrate on what they like about the forum and what they don't. Maybe this will help us 'slim' things down a little so we can have a tidy up.
This is a perfect opportunity for those members who, for whatever reason, have not been posting much/at all to tell us why and what has changed for the better/worse since you registered. We want you back and enjoying the forum :)
If there is something you would really like to see on the forum please let us know but remember we don't have a bottomless pit of money (I've spent it all on Liz Hurley's Christmas present and a certain hitman for Shane :-X :-[)

In general I think everything is very well organised and presented but I do have a 'niggle' about the 'Alerts'. I don't know if it's me or the system but even though I have openbed and read all of my alert messages the RED alerts number just won't go away and just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Hi Trevor,
If you click on 'see further alerts' it lists your alerts and then cancels the number in the red triangle

I can't seem to find the 'See Further Alerts' tag.

Scratch that. I've found it. Dooooh  :dunce:

I can't seem to find the 'See Further Alerts' tag.

It is on the right at the top of the window that opens when you click on the red triangle
It is not "See Further Alerts" it is "See More Alerts"

cheers John.

I, for one, think this forum is excellent.
I'm not a user of Facebook or Twitter and indeed don't subscribe to any other forums.
This one is always interesting and friendly - that's what keeps it running.
I used to subscribe to a forum representing my profession but that died a couple of years ago because people fell out, were obnoxious and were generally full of their own self importance. That type of thing doesn't happen on here so well done.
Everyone on here seems happy to help everyone else.
Keep up the good work I say.

As a newcomer to the hobby the forum has been a fantastic help.

No question is to much trouble and answers are all well informed,

There is light hearted banter, which is great, and if Carlsberg did foums...well!

Technically the forum has all bases covered for my needs.  Plenty of smilies, detailed profiles format options.

There were some comments on the FB N gauge page about too much information and folks finding it difficult to find what they wanted.  To my mind that is what the search function is for  There are possibly a few sections that could be tightened up a bit, but the fact that the forum embraces all aspects of our chosen scale and attracts members from all the world speaks volumes.

We need total honesty from everyone who responds to this, you, the membership, are what makes the forum and it live or dies on your input, so have your say and don't be shy  ;)

hi all

i must say i have tried others but  :NGaugeForum: is the only one i use for my N gauge fix

regarding Lawrances post above about the use of the "search" function

would it be possible to make it stand out a bit more, just like the "home" does  :hmmm:
as i feel it is easily missed in that long line of "words" at the top of the page

as sometimes i have to look twice to find it and i know where it is  :dunce:

Hi all,

Think it's the best. Friendly, whatever standard you are. Help from the 'elders' (hobby wise) without thinking your a twit with an a. (Maybe you do, but don't show it! :D.)

Is great to be a member here. I don't go to any other sites as don't feel I need to. Thanks for all the help and putting up with my stupid questions.

Cheers Weave

From time to time, I've thought about competitions (maybe just for fun).
What about a photographic competition - lots of scope. Perhaps "atmospheric" shots of our own layouts ?
We could all vote for winners.
Just an idea....!

I am a member of one other small British model railway forum other than this.

As a long time member and ex Mod I think this is by far the friendliest and most interesting forum on the www.

By nature I am a person that thinks a stock take of things every now and again is a good idea, I have never been a hoarder and dispose of things I don't need anymore.

I have spoken about this in the past and think it may be a good idea to check what forums sections are not being used regularly and maybe condense them into one section or delete them.

The amount of sections has grown very large and can sometimes be quite daunting to navigate, some sub sections could be condensed, eg  "N Gauge Loco's and Rolling Stock Reviews"  currently this is divided into 18 separate sections but would be a lot easier to navigate if it were divided into "British", "American" and "Continental".

There are other sections that are rarely used or broke into lots of sections that if condensed could make the forum easier for members to find their way around.

Just my two bobs worth.

Just accesing the forum for the first time on my phone (x10) . The first page to load was terrible, luckily I saw the "view full version" link

To reduce some of.the same questions coming up over and.again (and to avoid an entrance exam!) What about a guides section that we can all contribute to so that there is a definitive 'single location' for the info without all the same.topics coming back again and again.

Well where do I start??

I have met (online at the very least) some extremely talanted, knowledgable, welcoming and genuine people on this forum. Being on the other side of the planet has been no barrier at all, people have been prepared to send items half way across the world, share their knowledge - even go on errands making videos for me without asking in the name of research! I have never experienced such generosity before!

In all blatent honesty, I wouldnt waste half the time I do on this forum if it wasn't worth my while doing so. Truley.

The forum is a very positive place, very little negativity happens here, there is little to no politics, people are free to just relax and be themselves. I have yet to see that on another forum either over in the UK or over here. The Staff do a fantastic job keeping things in order and I feel they are to be congratulated for their efforts.

To me, yes some things could always be improved, but I have nothing specific that concerns me. I don't use the whole forum (not for any particular reason, I just check certain sections regularly), but the areas and tasks I use work fine for me and are administered well.

I would be interested to hear other people's opinions though!

My Thoughts.

Andrew

I echo Andrew's sentiments entirely.

Brilliant forum, managed with diplomacy and genuine interest in the members getting the maximum enjoyment from the hobby. All involved are to be congratulated on a well constructed site.  :claphappy:

I find my way around the site easily. The only bit I get muddled with is posting new images to my album and that's probably because sometimes I forget to switch the brain cell on first!  :dunce:

Out of interest, is it possible with this site to have the search bar perminantly displayed (or open a popup thingy on the page you are on- might need Javascript or similar) rather than having to click a link to a seperate page to search anything? Ive found this feature to be quite common elsewhere...

We did have a search bar on the top of the forum at the beginning, but Illori found it difficult to place that and the advertisements together if I remember correctly.  I must admit, it would be useful to have it back.  I'll ask.

Thanks Oldrailbug, I'll look into your idea and condense the boards.

Polo2k -  I'd be happy for volunteers to create guides for everyone.

Many thanks for the other kind messages of support about the forum.

[edit] it is back and i added the feature to search the whole forum/board/thread etc drop down.

Having been a moderator in the past of this Forum, I understand only too well what work goes into the day to day running of the site. No easy task I can tell you.

I think you have the balance of things right in general. I know we have the annual Christmas raffle, however it would be nice to see some extra prize winning competitions throughout the year. I know you are working on making the classifieds easier to use, so work in progress here.

The only thing I would change on this Forum is those two dodgy Flash so and so Global moderators you have (Lawrence and Newport Nobby) :P :P :P

Only joking   :smiley-laughing:, keep up the good work everybody. :thankyousign:

I can only really agree with what has been said so far, in that this is a great forum and by far the friendliest I have ever been on. Whilst I been on some other great non railway related forums I would say on all of them you have to put up with some bitching and rudeness from time to time. Just seems to be what happens when you get a large number of people together with differing opinions. It shouldn't be like that as the idea is to have people with different ideas but to talk about them openly and embrace the differences.
Anyway this forum does all that and more.

If I were to have a slight niggle it is just in the way pictures are uploaded and what you have to do to add pictures to posts. Hopefully now I have mastered the way it is done but do find that it is a much more long winded way of doing it that on many other forums.

Steve

Sounds good to me.  What you can do at the moment is set up 'Ultimate Profile' which is an advanced version of the normal profile.  You can put in your own pictures or text.

Click my profile icon on the left to have a look at mine and think if it can be adapted to what you're thinking.  If not, let me know.

How do you create your own 'Ultimate Profile'?

This would be a great help to those of us condemned to rural dial-up, like me but not from choice, especially when there are lots of pictures posted in a thread.

you can set that option in your profile under look and layout  "Show most recent posts at the top."

that would apply to all threads not just ones you have read in the past.

You can do this as this is how I view the posts.

If you go into your profile.
Then "Modify Profile"
Then "Look and Layout"
Put a tick in the last check box on the left
Your messages will now show the most recent first.

The only drawback to this is when someone refers to "the post above" as now in your case it will be the post below  ;)

Any problems let me know and I will help you out.

One thing that I think needs looking at is the mobile site side of the forum.

When I use it, there is a a notice "Go to main site" blazoned across the top of the page which can be so easily caught accidentally and immediately takes you to the full site.  The problem is getting back again, you have scroll way down the bottom of the page on the main site to find some minuscule text saying "mobile" and using a mobile it's not only difficult to find and use but also to accurately select it to put you back into mobile mode.

Grump over.

would it just be easier to remove the link on the mobile site at the top that goes back to the full site? the link is at the bottom of the mobile theme anyway.

One thing that I think needs looking at is the mobile site side of the forum.

Thanks Caz.  I agree about the 'mobile' button and will look into it.  Also the 'Go to main site'.

Not trying to sound like a mardy bum or anything but can we highlight the Search button in a different colour/size in its new location at the top right of screen, took me ages to find as it is less obvious in its new position.  :thankyousign:

the old search link still exists as well, you do not need to use the search feature at the top of the page unless you want to.

Is it possile to upload more than one photo into the profile pictures?
Hi John,
I can upload them individualy but it's fairly time consuming and I was wondering if it's possible to do a mass upload?
If not I will just do a few at a time.
David

You can David, if you have a look at Tanks profile you will see he has many pictures uploaded.
Or have I grasped the wrong end of the stick?

cheers John.

I am in the dark here as I have never tried to upload a number of pictures to my profile page.
I know there is a mass upload function in the albums section.
Perhaps one of the other mods will be able to tell you more.

On the mobile forum would be possible to put the button for unread posts at the top because you have to scrool down to the bottom for all those functions.
Btw I am using a fairly basic phone with wap only.
Another useful button on the mobile site would be a mark all as read .

Sorry I did not realise  they were different.
I assume I am using wap mode  on the phone.
The other idea if you cannot add more features would be just move the Options to the top of the list so it comes between the Header " N Gauge Forum and "General Catergory.

I do have one other suggestion.

When someone sends you a PM, you get an email. In that email is a link to reply to that PM. However there isn't a link to just simply view the message without having to read it as a quote in your response. Can this link be added?

The email has two links in it. The first is to reply. The second link is to view and needs a bit of text above it to say 'View this message' and the link works - thanks

I wonder if the reply to link is not necessary as you won't know if you want to reply to the message until you have viewed it. Just my view though - what do others think?

Have ploughed through all this (I even understood SOME of the tech stuff....but not much !) and I thought I'd put my ten pennyworth in !! I've been an n gauge modeller for 12 years now - more than some , but less than many more - and grappled with dcc for 10 years , and I just wish that the Forum had been available in my early years . I read recently in a mag article on the Dapol company that n gauge accounts for only 10% of our hobby's business , but it feels more than that....doesn't it ???
If you look at how busy the firms are which produce n gauge items , and at how many new ones are surfacing all the time , it feels like we've reached a critical mass now - our wallets are constantly under threat , now more than ever !!
In my opinion , Tank & the rest of the team do a really great job on the Forum ( Thinks:One day soon , I'll find out how ALL the bits on the Forum work .) Take a bow!! Best wishes , Ric

Some brilliant ideas about more sections and subsections needed on the forum, the way things are going we may need Satellite Navigation to find our way round it.

With over 100 sections and subsections and a much larger membership its becoming impossible to keep up with what is going on with the forum, I know I miss some very interesting discussion's that are stashed away in some far off subsection.

I may be a lone voice on this subject but IMO the sections should be condensed not expanded, there is an old saying "Sometimes Less is More", think about it.

Just my 2 bobs worth again.

Thank you for your suggestions about the forum layout - which we are giving serious consideration to. The forum has grown considerably (gosh - didn't realise we had over 100 sections and subsections) and we will need to keep the right balance between the ease of finding stuff and the number of boards/sub-boards.

Endorse ORB's comments.

The email advice on topics being followed is brilliant. I always pop down to the most recent posts as a quick way to see what else is going on.

I know there's been recent work to place the search button in an easier to find place but maybe - sorry if this sounds like overkill/too much work -
a Go To Section option, that is using the current Main sections,(Click to go to) at the top of the page. The subsections could possibly stay as they are but it may help folk zoom into what they'd like to read or reply to.

Just so I understand, do you mean that you'd like . . .

A drop-down on the top if each page that has the main sections listed and if you selected one of the options in the drop box it would take you to another section.

That's certainly one way.

The idea was perhaps a less 'busy' first screen and the user could choose to drill down from as you say, a drop down.

Does that make any sense?

I have no idea how much time and effort it work take so apologies if it's a daft idea.

No idea is a daft idea. So do you mean having the main sections on the front screen with drop downs on each of the main sections. For example, there would be 'Your layout and models' with a drop-down to the rest of that section. Sorry if I'm being a pain, but I need to understand exactly.

Unless something is immediately do-able, we are gathering the suggestions and then will make a decision on what is possible/not possible with our resources.

Not suggesting at all that it's a brilliant idea or that it should be done asap. Just a thought to reduce the amount of inital scrolling down to find whatever.

Thanks for listening. Somebody else says that, don't they?  :D

I also agree with that, for over a year now I have been scrolling down to the bottom of the page and reading/replying to threads, only when I have finished that do I look at some of the other sections, its lazy I guess but for me its the best way to navigate the forum.

Maybe a drop down menu or something at the top of the page with the "Latest Posts" listed in order would make the job easy and like Daveg said save all that scrolling, I check the forum half a dozen times a day so scrolling is like running a marathon  :D

I have to say that as part of the Moderating Team I always use the 'Unread posts since last visit' facility, then use the Home/End/Page Down/Page Up buttons to scoot around.
As we have to read everything regardless of interest (gotta keep an eye on everything >:D) I also find it helpful to have 2 tabs open for the forum

I'm wondering if the "Recent Posts" section down the bottom of the home screen could be made "Clickable" with an expanded list. One thing that keeps bugging me is, someone replies to a post I am watching that I really wanna read when Im at work on a break (means on the mobile but I use the full site page), however it means when I get home, theres sod all in the "Unread since last visit" as having logged in on the mobile wiped it, and I can't see what everyone has been writing!  :(

There are model railway forums that have the list of latest posts at the top of the page not the bottom, personally I think having it at the top of the page is far more convenient.

Its actually quite simple, shove this up to the top of the page and fit a scroll bar at the side of it so more threads can be seen, it would certainly save having to scroll past 43 sections to get to it.

My point being however that there is a limit of how many posts this will display, and a late shift at work in New Zealand whilst you Poms get up and have your morning Latte's wil actually see more topics written on than there are lines to show individual posts! If it could have the option of being scrolly and more lines - it means I would be able to look at select topics I am watching whilst at work without losing track of what else is going on when I get home and have more time!

Just a thought

I do. My problem is though that if I log on with the mobile - often a good several hours before I get home, often I am on because someone replied to a thread I am watching, and I don't have a lot of time to trawl through the rest of it. When I get home however, there is sod all on the unread list - certainly nowhere near what has been written since I went to work, as logging on on the mobile wipes this purely because I visited!  :(

Strange that :worried: If I bail out halfway through reading the unread posts, those I haven't read are still there when I log back in :confused1:

I often use my mobile for catching up quite often and all the posts I haven't read are still there when I get home and use the laptop indoors.  If I remember correctly there are various options if using the mobile, one of which is "mark all posts as read", maybe this option is inadvertently ticked when you click done etc.

What I did was to log off then log on on the Mobile site. I went to 'show unread posts' - there were about five of them. I opened up one of the unread posts before logging off. Then I logged back in on my lap-top, selected 'Show unread posts' and the same number came up (minus the one that I had just read)

I think I've had the same 'unread posts' issue as Kaiwhara :worried: as I know what time I logged out and when I logged back in, all the unread posts were from a time after that. I might have overlooked something though.

Will test during the day - if anyone else has same issue then please let us know

Sounds similar to me. If I log in on the mobile followed shortly by the Laptop or Vice Versa within a short time window they all still show. Once we start talking Hours though, different story.

How was the Latte?  :P

Did a test this morning using my Samsung Android mobile (Gingerbread 2.6) and Windows XP laptop (sp3).

Using the mobile I clicked on the little star to give access to the "read all unread" etc menu, selected "unread posts", left the first couple and the last couple in the list but read all the others.  I then exited my mobile browser.

10 minutes later, fired up laptop, checked unread posts and those that I had read weren't there but the ones I'd purposely left were still waiting for me.  So it all seems to work as it should on my systems.

I've come across a small niggle since the server upgrade.

On the Media button at the top I get various numbers highlighted in bold depending on which forum page I may be on. Before the upgrade it worked fine, as members added to their albums so the number changed until I'd cleared the viewed photos in the Unseen folder.

I currently have 2258 "unseen" photos to view but when I open the Media/Unseen the folder is empty.  :confused1:

I know I can ignore it but that kinda defeats the object of the Media button.

I tested this over an 18 hour period and about 10 unread items had dropped off the bottom on the unread items list. I had written down the first and last item in the list when I first logged on and when I logged on today they were not there.

Show unread posts since last visit -  This literally means to show the new post since the last time you visited the forum.  So, if you go away for a period of time then the forum will treat the next visit as new, and only show the new set of unread posts.

:thankyousign:

. . . . but not the set of unread posts that you had not read if you had logged in in the meantime (if that makes sense). So, if you are reading all unread posts, the moral is never to leave an unread post unread before you log out (otherwise you might not know that the post existed when you next log in).

I understand all that Tank, what I am trying to propose, and I'm not sure if I am explaining what I mean very clearly, is to have some way to log in with my mobile - which is usually to look at only 1 specific topic at that moment in time while on a break at work, and when I get home and log on, I can then spend time to catch up with what has been written that day. This is currently very hard to do if I log in with the mobile at some stage during the day as in the process of doing so - it wipes the unread list. It is making me reluctant to catch up with the forum except when I am at home, as it makes it very hard to find the posts for the day by any other means!

Sorry mate, my reply wasn't a direct reply to your post.....  Sure, I can see the problem here.  All I can suggest for now is that when you come home that you click the 'Unread Posts' button which is found at the side of each Board heading.  Or, is this not working for you either? ???

I can't say I have tried that. I can see that it would, but its possibly a bit of a pain in the arse way to do it, as it would mean trawling through the whole lot looking for a post if I am after a specific thread but I have no idea where it is. That's why I tend to use the Unread since last visit as it shows everything recent without having to go fishing - I am after something similar additional to this that could show for arguements sake everything for the last 24 hours, or an expanded list like the "Recent Posts" lot at the bottom of the home page.

Sure, I can see what you mean.  Basically an 'Unread Posts' button which would show ALL posts that weren't marked as read.  This would mean some big recoding of the forum.  I'll put it on my to-do list, as it makes good sense, and can hopefully be done by mid January.

Also about the photo competition. I clicked on the links to look at the gallery and there were four photos but when I clicked on them for a slide show the text at the bottom of the photo window describing the photo and the camera, etc. was (on my browser at least) a very light shade of grey and I didn't realise there was even text there at first. Can you change it so the text is black, or is it a problem my end?

Whoa! Major improvement! When I first joined, it took me quite a while to work out how to post pictures, and a major reason was I did not see the 'details' text under the photos at first. Great work. I guess it's just a little thing, but a huge improvement, for sure. Thank you!

Can I enquire what happened to this thread - there seems to be othing posted for the last two months?  In fact, a number of threads seem to have suddenly died unexpectedly, with no posts for some time.  Is it a case of the thread is full up and it can't take any more or have these subjects just died for lack of interest?

Ok, Thanks Tank.

My own tupennce halfpenny-worth, and worth exactly half what you paid for it.

I get a message (email) saying there has been a new posting on a thread I'm watching - but not just one email but (I think) one for each post and I don't know which is the latest.  I'd find it just as good to get one email per thread only until I go and look at the message(s).  Which ties into my second thought.

I understand what was being said about mesages disappearing even if not read.  Sounds to me like it needs a switch to show the message has been read - then it can disappear off the list.  I don't know how this is switched or whether it can be deliberate.  Up to you guys who programme it.

John

Know where you're coming from, there, John - I spend a lot of time deleting emails which are duplicated regularly. However, on the other hand, me being me, I think that if I only got one per thread, I'd probably forget to keep checking that thread. At least the constant emails arriving remind me to take a look.

It's a hard one.... be interesting to hear what the team think.

George

You should only get one email per thread to show that someone has replied.  It will only send you more if you've looked at that thread and then someone replies again.

This can be changed in your Profile, by looking for Notifications on the left panel.  It's customisable for each user.

Bit of progress:-  The company who run the server have told me that a member with a certain IP Address is opening a lot of connections to the server.  I'm sure this is not malicious, as the member has made a good number of knowledgeable posts.  This however seems to be the reason for the slowness at times.  The host has had to ban them for now, but I hope to resolve this soon!

So does Tank get two hours refund for the server being unavailable?

A momentary 'can't display page' came up as I was posting a reply a few moments ago.

Tried a Preview and then Post, which then went through OK .

Hello!

It may be a bit presumptuous of me suggesting an improvement when I've only been a member 5 minutes, but fresh pair of eyes and all that...

There are excellent topics for loco reviews, coach reviews, building reviews etc, but I'm surprised there isn't one for kit reviews. I'm considering buying the Langley Drewry shunter kit from the NGS and I was trying to find out what chassis was recommended, but I haven't found any info so far. There are references to kits in the On My Workbench topic, but nothing gives any info on chassis required, or how difficult a kit is to build, possible modifications, or how accurate it is, which could perhaps be usefully gathered together in one place. It would also be useful if someone could review the different tender drives available and which kits they will fit.

This is the only hole that needs plugging as far as I can see. This is a great forum - well managed, with excellent contributions. Long may you continue!

Kind regards,

Chris

Hi, Chris, and another thank you from me for your great comments.

I can help you out with that Langley Drewry shunter... when I saw the above post, it reminded me that I purchased the  exact same kit 20 years ago, and had totally forgotten about it! Anyway I dug it out of the deep recesses under my layout, and yep, there it is, a bag of bits still in the box!

Anyway, it says on the box:

"Adapted to fit the Minitrix 0-6-0 2043 chassis"

Hope this is of assistance!

George

Further to that, I just opened it up and it consists of white metal parts and an etched brass fret of body sides, coupling rods, etc.

The instructions are very detailed (5 printed pages), but it does state that it is not an ideal kit for complete beginners. Soldering is the preferred method of construction, although it states that epoxy can be used instead.

The chassis requires extensive modifications - the motor has to be removed and the chassis has to cop a lot of cutting about.

It certainly does not appear to be for the faint-hearted - which is probably why I've left it sitting in the box for 20 years!  :laugh3:

Well to throw in my five pennyworth - as a newbie I come to NGF with no history or pre-conceptions. There are some really lousy railway forums online - either badly organised or dominated by a toffee-nosed clique. NGF seems really different with a great ethos and people being decent towards each other. The basics of NGF really work for me and I feel at home here already. My feedback would be don't change too much. It's brilliant just as it is. OK all forums can benefit from good new ideas and a freshen up ...the photo comp for example with affordable prizes from the merchandise range.

Well done to all the people who drove NGF forward and created a lovely little niche online for us 2mm addicts.

Have to agree. I have nosed around in other forums and they do seem to be dominated by a few people. I looked at this forum for a number of weeks and liked what I saw, more importantly everyone is helpful and friendly. It was the pages of this forum that convinced me to buy my first ever set and join this forum. I don't regret either.

By gosh yes! This is a really nice forum. It's non-judgemental almost always, and most people seem to go out of their way to say nice things. Playing with toy trains is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me -- I think my wife could find me several more productive ways to busy myself around the house -- but reading this forum and sharing experiences really helps me feel more positive about my hobby. For that, I thank you all.

I've found NGF so friendly and helpful. Most posts are not "don't be a fool you must do it this way" more "You may want to try it this way". They say the same thing but I know which is most helpful.*

I am a member of 4 Forums as follows (in alphabetical order)

1. LibreOffice Forum (I use LibreOffice as a "free" alternative to MS Office)
2. NGF
3. SOC Forum (For Stag Owners Worldwide)
4. Tenerife Forum (For all things relating to life in Tenerife)

The 1st one I use rarely, only when I have a problem or need information.
The NGF I only joined relatively recently and now use it daily.
The 3rd one I use maybe 2 or 3 times a week.
The 4th one only now and again, usually when I need some new information.

The Stag Forum I have been a member of for many years and it used to be very friendly and quite humorous, but about 12 months ago the posting of jokes and "funnies" was  banned from the Forum, and it has now lost it's sparkle and become too serious.

THE NGF I think have got things just right, and I have found it to be both informative and friendly, and I don't think I have upset too many people with my posts, although I have had the odd "negative" comment.

The only thing I would say is - is it necessary to have to always scroll down more than half a page of advertising etc., before you get to the nitty gritty (ie. Posts). I would like to see a re-design of the opening page to make it quicker & easier to see the latest posts. The advertising and selected photos could go at the bottom.

Just my opinon

Sorry to post straight after Sprintex,  but it is not a case of mods ganging up here, just coincidence  that I clocked onto the forum and found this.

Sprintex has a very valid point. If someone clicks "Thank you" then it means that the post was indeed "liked."

We often get queries as to how to do this and how to do that, and have even had complaints that things are too complicated.

Another click button makes things more complex, and as Sprintex says, surely if you click thank you, it means you like it.

Things have changed just a little since I made post #202 earlier on this Thread.

The NGF is now the Forum I use (and like) more than any other, and the one that I click on each day I am at home.

I still stand by the comment I made in the last paragraph of post #202 though, but that withstanding I don't think much, if anything else needs to be changed, and it remains as friendly as ever, and I can't remember the last time a Moderator pulled me up for going "off topic".

One of these days I will get to meet up with another NGF member for the first time, if not in the U.K., then if any of you take a holiday in Tenerife please contact me if you would like to meet up for a pint and a chat, and I might even show you my layout (regardless of what state of change it is in!).

Regards

Terry

Paul

Your interpretation of "Thanks" is in due resepct wrong.

Thank you is used to appreciation for something or for a service, eg:

"I like your train",    the reply would be "Thanks"

You wouldn't say :

"I thanks your train"   reply "What the... ??? ???"

However if you were to give someone information by posting a link

The reply could be either "Thanks" or "Like"

If somone were to post a picture of a scratchbuilt building you wouldn't ( or shouldn't) say "thanks" but you would say that you "like" it.

Now on to Facebook, I'm not sure how old you are, but I can assure you that forums were around long before whassis name dreamed up Facebook, only then we called them a BBS, a bullettin board system, and we were using terms like "likes" long before he was old enough to sit in front of a keyboard.

On to the other point.

If people find buttons confusing it is because the GUI is wrong, either the wrong wording or wrong icon has been chosen for the given command.
I find the icons you use for images and attachments confusing, so I choose to enter the BBCode myself, ( theres a way back; BBCode ? as in Bulletin Board Code). I can appreciate that not every one knows BBcode, and that is why we now have a GUI, or Icons to click on.

Now gimme the button or the teddy bear gets it !  :bounce:

I quite agree that they are two different things, and it's probably something that I'll look into in the future.  However, I do think that folk use the 'Thank You' as a 'Like'.

I also enter the BBCode, but I also just click the icons - usually depending on how easy it is to enter the code.  I don't see what's confusing about the icons? ???  They are what they are, click and it's there.

You have got to be kidding me Chris !

Both the Image Icon and the attachment Icon show pictures.

When you hover over the attachement Icon it says "Insert Picture"
When you hover over the image icon it says "Insert image"

Now pardon me for being pedantic, but what is the difference between a picture and an image ?

Ans .... Nothing

Now those two buttons are confusing.

The accepted Icon for an attachment is a paper clip, it's sort of universal in word processing or e-mail land.

On forums the generally accepted Icon is a film strip to denote "media" and the hover prompt is normally  "insert" or "upload" a media file.
Title: Re: Feedback about the forum
Post by: Tank on October 23, 2015, 06:27:36 PM
The attachment feature that you usually get with forums has always been disabled on this forum.  We prefer to use the 'Media' function as it stores all types of media in folders, so members can store their uploads in an organised manner, which you don't get with attachments, and why we don't use a paperclip.

As for the wordings, it was written by myself, and I didn't think much of the fact that I used two different words.  As you say though, they mean the same thing, so it can't be confusing, can it?  Maybe odd that I decided to use two words, but not confusing.

Unless I respond to a post with a reply, I use the 'Thank You' smiley to denote just that - 'Thank You' for your post. Ergo, 'like' doesn't really come into it for me.
Surely the 'thumbs up/down' could be used for 'liking/disliking' something?
Title: Re: Feedback about the forum

I don't know whether this is relevant to the current theme on this topic, but I'd like to say that there are two things that make it really user friendly for me:

- It's N Gauge only, so it's all relevant, potentially;

- the site is laid out in a way that makes it easy to find what you're looking for.

All credit to the designer.

As a US based N Gauger, this site is my go to for everything n gauge and rail related. I can't tell you how happy it makes me or how much I enjoy just browsing through the posts. Everyone is wonderfully helpful and the layout is lovely. The ONLY thing I would want that I don't think is presently available is an app for the forum. I browse on my iPhone a great deal but don't like posting from the mobile format. I use the forum enough that I would love an app for it to streamline things like postings be reposting  pictures and the like. I right now use my laptop for SCARM and the forum and little else! I did not think anyone here was proposing a Facebook LikeIt system, that is a much more, umm,, intimate thing, almost as bad   involved as a marriage vow !

No, here I would like a "Like It" button, to signify a much less serious undertaking, a simple ack. that I liked something that someone said nothing more.
I usually want to do it when something has amused me but is not worth a post with a thumbs-up icon that only serves to clutter up a thread, especially as that 'something' is often off topic anyway, a witticism often.

I would, again usually, only use a "Thank You" for something that I thought especially helpful to the topic.

Ok, thats my -/3d worth for now :)

If you had read my post, you would know that forums were using a like system well before Facebook was thought of.

If anything, all Wassisname did was take all the good bits about BBS and Forums and turned it into one great big www.Talkaboutthingsyoudoeveryday.com (http://www.talkaboutthingsyoudoeveryday.com), but that wasn't a catchy title, so he called it Facebook instead.

WARNING  "Totally Off Topic" but relevant.

One of my colleagues we shall call "Duncan" ( real name), was convinced after some time to join Facebook and to take part in the banal and boring that goes on. It took some convincing, because like a lot of us he wasn't "into that sort of thing"

However he joined, he didn't type much, didn't like much, so it took more convincingto get him to post stuff, he had loads of friends and we had to convince him again to join in. I must state at this point that Duncan is a bit of an oddball, he see's life totally different to the rest of us.

His first offering was  ( and I've cleaned this up for a family forum)

Went to bathroom.

Very disappointed today, must be constipated, could muster anything.

Been to the bathroom again, sat there for 20mins, still nothing

Plus

Went to Asda, then proceeded to list everything he bought

Went to Cinema, then proceeded to relate the whole plot and the story, with spoilers !

this went on and on, until eventually we had all had a go at him.

His retort was, "you asked me to join"

With regards the numerous comments about Facebook - I personally dont use it and don't intend ever doing so - but my wife does, and it does have a certain relevance when you live abroad.

For example we have 5 grandchildren in the U.K. who we don't see as much of as we used to, and instead used to "Skype" with them which was never very reliable.

However as both my wife and the granchildren have I-pads we now use Facetime to see and talk to them, and the picture is far clearer, and the sound better than Skype, and is also far more reliable we have found.

My wife also uses Facebook to keep in touch with other relatives, so it does have it's uses.

I can also never understand why some Facebook users need to tell everyone what they are doing.

Tank has said he will look into it for the future so we will need to wait and see.

Title: Re: Feedback about the forum
Post by: Pengi on October 25, 2015, 04:43:28 PM
Please do not keep comparing us to Facebook, we are a forum - which is totally different :)

All that is being asked for is an additional button to 'like' a post - not a fully fledged 'friends' system.

I would like the opportunity to 'like' or 'favourite' a post that is about, for example, someone's model railway whilst also being able to 'thank' someone for a useful hint or tip. I certainly would never be half-hearted about liking a post on this forum.

Strong opinions both ways on this.

I'm sadly surprised that we seem to have this "discussion" every 6 months ...

We already have a "friends" icon / tag type facility, we've been given the "@" tag, and now people are clamouring (again) for a "like" button ... instead of using the "thanks" button.

I would like the opportunity to 'like' or 'favourite' a post that is about, for example, someone's model railway whilst also being able to 'thank' someone for a useful hint or tip.

Still sounds like the same thing to me  ???

If I remember correctly, click on the picture in the gallery. Towards the bottom of the page, you will see 'BB Code'. Copy that link and paste into your post. If I have got that wrong - sorry!

Just experimented - doing the above puts the actual photo' into the post.

Hi there Tank,

Just a quick note. I tried to get to the Forum using www.ngaugeforum.co.uk (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk) in my browser (Windows explorer in Win10). I get a 403 forbidden error when I try this.

Currently the only way I can get access is to google the forum and then use any link that doesn't point at the 'home' page, or use a link notifying me of messages or posts.

Don't know if this is normal or if it is a problem. Just thought Id let you know

Stuart

A non-techy try using the link in your thread Stuart worked OK for me and I'm using WIN10 with Chrome.

Want to try my link with the https bit at the front? https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk)

Could not decide whether to put this here or start a new thread....

Regarding Alerts and 'see more alerts' , when I click on 'see more alerts' I get taken to a new page where I was expecting to see a list of alerts only to find one alert per page. I think it would be better if it could display a list of alerts, perhaps 20 per page instead of having to trawl through many pages to find the link to any certain alert that had been spotted.

The old system seemed better as in all alerts would remain visible until clicked and now as soon as you click one the rest vanish.

Maybe it's just me but after several months of the forum simply wizzing along, it's been just a tad slow the last two or three days.
Nothing serious at all but each topic takes 2-3 seconds to load at the moment.
Anyone else noticing this?

The internet is groaning under the volume of ladies in leotards Zooming their Pilates classes.  A typical class of 50 means 50 HD video streams.

It is exceeding the "traditional" highest volume use of the internet

Not exactly a new thing is it @Newportnobby (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=264) ? I've been watching them for years on the tinterweb. I think the estimate of a class of 50 equalling 50 HD video streams is wildly out, I reckon you could multiply that by 10 for those watching but not taking part

I just noticed the live chat today. Very nice new feature to have. Although it has a couple of oddities.

Firstly, when it's expecting new text it's prompting me to select my username to embed at the start of the text (I'm assuming this is a reply-to like helper). This is in addition to the username it shows when you enter the text, so it ends up there twice. It comes up for every blank line, so it's a tad annoying.

Secondly it's scrolling the wrong way with the last entry at the top. So it makes it hard to read a conversation.

Ah! Okay, I didn't dream it then. I thought 'it' had happened, but I was absolutely knackered last night and nodding off on the sofa, so when I looked this morning and it wasn't there I wondered if I'd just 'stepped outside' at some point.

Why did it appear?

Why did it disappear?

Is it like 'Brigadoon'?
Title: Re: Feedback about the forum
Post by: zwilnik on January 26, 2021, 03:35:57 PM
It shows if you click on the main forum button to view all the forums.

I think I know what's wrong with the text entry too. It thinks it's a login/name entry field, so it's showing the key on the right hand side and expecting you to enter a username. That's why it's suggesting your username each time. It could have been a worse bug, it could have been tagged as a password entry field ;)

Good to see ongoing development of the site!

Could I put in a request for something completely different, but which I think will be very helpful, a [Save draft] button when posting?

I've lost count how many posts I didnt quite make because something or other happened (not necessarily technical) before I had finished and posted an item.

Thanks!

Thanks Mick. Yes, sometimes I do this when I know before hand it'll be a long/complex post I won't finish in one go, but multiple windows can be tricky on a phone or tablet, and Word/Docs sometimes try to interpret urls or put in their own formating, so you have to remember to say its txt only, and ...

Anybody notice that it seems to be just Moderators who can not 'Save As Draft'?  Wonder if somebody is trying to tell them something. :hmmm:  And can I suggest Nick @Railwaygun (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=941) that you leave our buffers alone please?  :)

Little hitch at 16.25 today but eventually the forum got going again.

Connection Problems

Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

Waitrd 5 mins and all was well.

Saving a draft from this comment ads it to your draft list.

The only way I have found to access it later is to do a dummy draft, which calls up your draft topic list , which can be accessed/ copied.

two changes I have noticed since the upgrade...

1. you now HAVE to put a subject in a pm, no subject is no longer acceptable

2. you used to be able to see a member's status, ie sending a message, etc, but this has now also disappeared.

intentional, or just happened ??

I've raised this one in a post before, but I'm still getting strange results when using the "recent unread posts" button. Sometimes it shows me a list, as used to happen pre-update, but most times it says "there are no updated files, try all unread" or something similar. I press this and lo, there are unread posts since my last visit. It's not a biggie to get round but the old button was 100% reliable, and this one seems erratic.....

I don't use "Recent Unread Posts" or "Updated Topics", as I can't quite see what the differences are, or what 'Recent' is actually referring to, (how recent is recent).

I just click on "All Unread" all the time and it works fine.

As per previous responses - the "recent unread posts" is the equivalent to the old "new posts since your last visit" i.e. only topics that have had new posts since however your device and the forum interact to close a session.
Like most, I don't bother with it and go directly to the "all Unread" button (right next to "recent unread posts").

More often than not when logging on I get a pop-up message telling me there's been an error. I initially thought I'd entered my password wrong but each time the error message self clears and takes me to the normal logged-in page.

I wonder if there's a time-out setting that needs tweeking?

I have another issue which was spotted by @Malc , my fish is dead! By that I mean that I used to have a fish moving across the bottom of my signature but now he just sits there :(  It looks like the [move] function doesn't work any more and neither does [marquee] which is the usual html way of doing this. Have these html tags been disabled in a signature? Is there another way I can revive my fish?

I have found another issue too but I'll post that in another response to keep things tidy.

My other issue is that if I want to tag someone like Bob Tidbury I start typing @ Bob (without the space of course) and it offers up a few Bobs but doesn't go down as far as Bob T. As soon as I type the space in his username the offered list disappears. If I type his full name including the space it looks like he does get tagged but if I speeled his name incorrectly he wouldn't receive a message. Is there any way to change this? Maybe just allowing the suggested list to be longer?
Sorry if this has been asked before but I forget things easily these days as I approach my later years  :o

If you want to follow and receive notifications of posts on a topic select the box "No alerts or emails" and choose your preferred option. The default is "no alerts" even if you have posted in a topic.

I always choose from  "Recent Unread Posts" and "All Unread" and both work for me.

Would it be possible to allow a 'thread starter/author/owner' to delete any inappropriate posts on their own thread? I constantly get inane and irrelevant replies on my layout thread from a certain individual and would like to be able to delete them as often they push my own most recent post usually including pictures of my layout progress back to the previous page where some people don't see them as they only look at the most recent page of the thread.

Or you can make me a moderator and I can delete them like that  :D

Maybe a polite but firm PM to the individual concerned first.
If your polite but firm request is ignored then report each unwanted post.
This would only apply to your own thread
Title: Re: Feedback about the forum
Post by: Trainfish on October 22, 2023, 04:23:54 PM
I may try that but on a recent post which you have probably seen I 'politely' asked for experiences of using products and not google links but still that certain individual responded within just a few minutes as they usually do with google links and when asked if they had used them, as I had requested, they said no. A lot of us go off topic etc at times and I encourage that on my layout thread but when I politely asked not for links and promptly got them I was tempted to be a lot more 'impolite' than the post I replied with. If (sorry, when) it happens again they will get a PM but I can't promise it will be polite.

I guess that means my informal application to be a moderator has been turned down  :*(

Title: Re: Feedback about the forum

My understanding of the ignore button is that I just won't see their posts, is this correct? If so it doesn't really achieve what I think is needed as it would look like the conversation is disjointed if others comment on posts which I don't see. It would also still push my updates back to the previous page if the ignored poster continues to post.
I think I'm correct in my understanding of the ignore function but do let me know if not.

You are correct. The posts would only be ignored by yourself and everyone else could read/respond.
Maybe @Tank will correct me if I'm wrong but there is no way for Admin/Mods to stop a person posting in certain sections. As Alan will know all too well, total post moderation is the only way to prevent anyone from posting without their posts being 'vetted'.
In this situation I believe it would be wrong on all counts to do that unless a large number of members were to complain

Assuming it is the member I suspect, unfortunately he has 'form' for it across all areas of the forum...
Maybe he is (over) trying to be helpful, not realising he is adding nothing useful to the thread, but he blatantly either doesn't read or doesn't understand the threads he is posting in...
If you post "Product X is out of Stock at retailer Y, has anywhere else got any" he'll post a link to retailer Y's website.
He frequently posts incorrect information, then when he's corrected by someone else, he adds three more posts explaining how he sneezed while he was posting so couldn't see what he was typing, or had to answer a phone call which meant he forgot the question.
If you add up all his claimed service in various roles on the railway, he is at least 200 years old.
And goodness knows how many "Great photo" / "nice model" etc posts from him...

I agree that some suggestions are extreme but I do believe that my suggestion for thread starters/owners particularly in the Layout construction section (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?board=2.0) to be able to in effect moderate their own thread is a valid suggestion.

Yes it is the member who you suspect as I have seen the posts in my thread which you have 'reacted' to. Yes, he is trying to be helpful but unfortunately he usually achieves the opposite which is rather frustrating. The perfect example is, and I apologise for repeating this, in this post of mine (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=24504.msg812615#msg812615) where I specifically requested people not to post results of google searches to then see a reply just 6 minutes later with results from a google search by this individual. I could maybe have responded in a calmer manner than I actually did but as this is such a regular occurence I decided that I'd had enough and called him out on it. Since then I have had PMs from 3 or 4 people who applauded me for calling him out and judging from responses both here and in my layout thread there are plenty of people who agree with me.
If something can be done along the lines of my suggestion then great. If not then so be it but it may reduce the number of posts I make in future. I actually have an update to post on my layout thread tonight including some pictures but I'm not in the right frame of mind to do it right now, sorry to those who enjoy and react to my updates, knowing that there will be a response from this member within minutes with either the results of yet another google search or a "Great photo" / "nice model" comment (phrase 'stolen' from @PLD) to get his post count up even higher than the 15,000+ he already has. That's the 3rd highest post count on the forum by the way with the only 2 above him being mods who have been on the forum 3 years longer than he has. My own post count is just a third of his and again, I have been a member here for 3 more years than him. I've even been a member here longer than @Newportnobby according to the member list. Only 2 days longer but still  :D

That's enough from me for now and I may post my update tomorrow or during the week on my layout thread, sorry for the hesitancy to post it tonight but I don't want to go to bed in an angry mood.

There is another important success criterion that you might consider. Your layout actually runs. @Newportnobby 's doesn't (and neither does mine).

Only bits of mine do!

There is absolutely no reason why you can't report a post to the Moderators requesting it be removed from your own thread.
The Moderators can then look at any responses maybe quoting that post and remove them as well if necessary

It is when the moderators knock on your door at 5am demanding a part of your layout that offended someone that you have to worry.

Although for some layouts that might not be a bad thing...

Assuming it is the member I suspect,

I think a lot of us know who we are referring to. I have had problems in the past, via PM's with this person, but I agree with @Ed . Nobody is perfect and we all do/say things that annoy people sometimes. Okay, some more than others, but I think we should cut this person a bit of slack.

Exactly what I was about to write.  Report the posts you wish deleted.  I do advise messaging the person, and perhaps suggest they use the Reactions, unless they have something to contribute to the thread.

After careful consideration and taking in everybody's opinions I have messaged this member and asked them not to post on my layout thread. I haven't heard anything back yet but hopefully this will do the trick. Thanks all
