LMS Prince of Wales - What did it haul?
« on: March 19, 2017, 05:48:33 pm »
I'm counting on the vast knowledge bank here to help me out.

I have the Union Mills LMS Prince of Wales and I know when it was LNWR it was a passenger service, but when
they were used on the LMS did they do other things? Freight? Mail/Parcels? Or did they continue in the passenger service only? Thanks!

Hi There!!

You can safely say that as the LMS ran them down for scrapping they would of been used for anything, WW 2 gave some of them a longer life, I think four of them made it 1948 and the start of British Railways but never got their new numbers before the were sent to the wall, hope that helps.

After being ousted from the premier trains on the West Coast main line by the Royal Scots, their main duties were on longer distance secondary passenger services. Mail & Parcels are a possibility but freight would be unlikely as they were designed for fast running not for slow speed pulling power.

Hi Scott.

I couldn't find any photos of PoWs hauling freight on the Warwickshire Railways web site.

However there is a nice photo of PoW no.5676 hauling a fully-fitted freight (25 covered vans) in 1928 on page 79 of Bon Essery's book "Railway Operation for the Modeller".

Best regards

Joe
