Helix kits or design ideas
« on: July 12, 2018, 09:49:28 pm »
Hello all,

I've been reading a number of the posts on the forum around gradients and have been struggling with the design for the second (scenic) half of the new layout.  I had originally hoped to be able to install a small reverse loop and storage sidings under the section, but I've now come to the conclusion that to create enough hand space in case I need to get in there, the inclines are just too great.

So I'm now looking at a small single track helix to wind up and down from the reverse loop and storage sidings.

Has anyone ever bought a kit for this, and if so where from (I'm kind of in the dark on these things) or has anyone found any useful designs for homegrown helix's?

I've found a number of helix calculators on the web, but these appear for OO and downscaling them, though possible, is a pain.

As always, any guidance is welcome.

Stu...

On the French N Gauge Forum a member is 3D printing helix segments which can be stacked, hopefully without finessing the adjustment at each turn. The segments are 22.5 degrees each (16 segments per circle), and as printed give a 48mm rise between levels. There is a slot for two Peco tracks in R2 and R3 (not sure if that is UK R2/R3, or the smaller continental R2/R3). For a 9 inch curve the ramp angle works out at 1 in 30.

Although the content is in French the photos are fairly self explanatory.
