hi shandy , wish you well with your new loco - word of warning - dont let it insight of DCC anologe running , run in on 12 volt DC  , if DCC comes in contact with un chipped Union Mills - motor will burn out within 2 seconds .

Hi Alan, thanks for the info.

I won't subject it to DCC before it's chipped. I don't have a DC layout anymore but I have a switchable test track/rolling road that I use to test new locos.

Not sure what chip to put in it, I guess it depends on the space I can get in the tender.

Cheers Steve

the Digitrax DZ 125 will fit , most of my early attempts (as per the fitting sheets that i compiled for UM locos) i used the early Hornby R8249 as its only contolling the motor , you can safly remove unwanted wires . The Bachmann 6 pin decoder and 'flying' lead + socket is to big to fit inside the tender comfortably .

Thanks again Alan, I'll try and get hold of a DZ125, I've got a couple of locos fitted with those and they seem pretty good. Looking forward to getting the loco, it should be waiting at home when I get back towards the end of the week :)

Union Mills 2014 New Release
« Reply #49 on: February 10, 2014, 09:41:10 pm »
Hi,

It now seems that the next Union Mills model will indeed be a Claud Hamilton D16/3 4-4-0. No word on livery, but I suspect it'll be offered in LNER green and BR black.

It should be available around July / August, so better get saving!

Martin

PS. How about a J15 next?

If this is indeed correct a D16/3 is a great choice of loco.

I will definitely have a BR one. I wonder how much od a compromise the tender will have to be though.

I totally agree a J15 would make a perfect partner for it and i'd have one of those too!

Brilliant news! As I like to model the ex-GER section of the LNER, a Claude of any sort is something I have dreamed of being able to get at some time!  :) I have a kit and a GF chassis to make one too, but that is in the 'to do' box...  :-[

Last time I ordered from Union Mills I asked about a J15, as Colin is a GER fan - he said that he would love to be able to do one, but his present motors wouldn't fit into the small J15 tender. Maybe a project for future years though, with a smaller motor?  :hmmm:

Well I'll be having one of those in LNER green then

The UM J25 I acquired earlier this month is superb.

I e-mailed Colin Heard the other day.

He has replied and confirms his next model will definitely be a D16/3.

He mentioned tooling for a new tender of a later pattern too big for a J15. I thought the D16/3s only ran with the short GE tender - Am I wrong?

If you are modelling the GE in LNER days you could always justify a Union Mills J27.  Twelve were sent to the GE in the mid-twenties instead of new J39s diverted elsewhere.  In 1939 they had all moved to Grantham, and back to the NE in 1940.

Oh yes - it is on my 'to buy' list, after I read about it here - http://www.lner.info/locos/J/j27.shtml (I am on the LNER forum as Paul B too!)  Unfortunately, my 'to buy' list is longer than my 'money available' list...  :'(  I do already have a UM J39 and a B12 though!

Shame that- I've just sold one of my two ER J27s and repainted the other into BR.  Trevor Webster sold the layout they ran on so they were surplus.
