I want to get some four wheel coaches for a branch line layout, where can I find some?  :helpneededsign:

Hi, four wheel coaches can be a tricky one, they are out there but sometimes can be a bit pricey due to their rarity.
Graham Farish produced a four wheel coach, I don't think it was based on any particular design, you can quite often find these going for silly prices on eBay.

If your happy to have a go at a simple kit then I would recommend etched pixals, they produce brass kits but they have also started to make 3d printed bodies, designed to fit a peco 15' brake van chassis or similar. I have a model of one, I'll dig it out later and take a picture.
Here is their site; http://www.ultima-models.co.uk/catalogue/

I've seen shredded wheats locos and coaches going for $30 on eBay, are those any good?

They were produced by Farish based on their standard tooling, but with simplified couplings which would need to be removed and replaced.  They were promotional items, not worth paying a lot for them. The loco is unpowered.

Here in the UK the old Farish 4-wheelers are still quite easy to find second hand but that doesn't help you much being over the other side of the pond!

Why not just Google 'farish 4 wheel coaches'? eBay UK has lots - at a price! B

Or you can build from kits, Ultima/Etched Pixels has quite a good range of 4 & 6 wheel coaches .

Most 4 and 6 wheel coaches had gone by the 1920s, a few were transfered to departmental use and used for staff or storage use on breakdown trains, others could be "grounded" - wheels and underframes removed and used as stores or offices in goods yards; others could be sold to farmers, grounded  and used for storage sheds or even a few as chicken coops.

Is this for more TTE models like your other coach question?

Tomix make Thomas with Annie and Clarabel as 4-wheelers (I think I read somewhere that they were bogie coaches according to the original books but Hornby and just about everyone else makes them as 4-wheelers)

Another build option is to take the Farish suburban bogie coaches and chop them up. Depending on what type of coaches you want you can mount the chopped bodies on 10ft or 15ft (or anything in between) chassis or even the NGS 6 wheel chassis if you're being flash :)

I've been messing about with it a bit here.. http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=32970.msg379728#msg379728

There's also a great article in one of this year's NGS journals (4/17) of some that were finished to a much higher quality.
