"Wheels of Steel" now online only
« on: January 11, 2018, 11:55:32 pm »
Just in case anyone's researching a trip to London, I found a small flyer in some 2nd hand stock I've just acquired advertising the fact that "Wheels of Steel" (formerly a stall in Grays Antique Market in central London) is now online only: https://wheels-of-steel.org/

Oh, I used to enjoy dropping in there whenever I was in London.

I figured it makes sense to put it here if someone was looking for the shop in the expectation it still exists in its not-online bricks'n'mortar version :)

this was the only shop in C London that sold N ( albeit s/h) and it was always worth dropping by.

However he always looked more depressed whenever I visited! ( cause/effect??)

Thanks for the info but for an on-line only outlet the website is very poor. Just clicked on N gauge and there seems to be only one Faller viaduct item shown. Can't seem to find anything else.

Sort of a shame in the sense when I did visit, sometimes I did find some lovely things at good prices. The trader was a very nice chap, too.

On the other hand, it was closed Saturdays, which was awkward for me as my trips to London were normally on the weekend! If the online store has a good range of stuff, I might well find myself buying things more often.

This does mean that Central London is basically devoid of model railway shops. Outer London not quite so grim: Invicta Models is excellent, and Kent Garden Railways is a proper Aladdin's cave of modelling stuff for all scales, despite the name. There is a shop on Northfields too run by a retired maths teacher that is a definite experience -- full of stock, friendly proprietor, but hard to browse because literally getting in the door requires stepping over piles of stock and/or junk!

Cheers, NeMo

Ian Allen at Waterloo is presumably also still there, and IIRC Jane's Trains in the sarf?
