Oxford Diecast 2018 – deliveries and announcements
« on: December 11, 2017, 05:34:43 pm »
With the final Oxford deliveries to retailers just about over for 2017, I thought I would start a new topic for the 2018 period. 2018 is the 25th anniversary of the founding of Oxford Diecast although the N range is only about 10 years old.

A major event in October 2017 related to a changed role for the Oxford founder and part owner – Lyndon Davies.  His daughter Eloise Davies took over the Managing Director’s role at Oxford Diecast when Mr. Davies became CEO of Hornby Hobbies. Hornby intends buying a minority stake (49%) in LCD Enterprises the holding company for Oxford Diecast Limited. There is a lot of speculation about convergence (and divergence) in the LCD and Hornby ranges, especially where they overlap in model trains, model road vehicles and model buildings. Time will reveal the actual changes planned.

The list of announced but not yet delivered N scale items is below. With the exception of NMB004 (announced in January 2017) all these were announced in June or October 2017. This time last year there were 6 more models on the waiting list than now.

The gaps in range continue to exist for all sorts of periods for cars and light vans, medium weight trucks, some useful but unusual bodies like livestock carriers, refuse collection vehicles, and just about anything you can think of. Even with upwards of 350 vehicles already available the range is never going to satisfy every wish.

The current range appears here with many of the newer announcements near the top of the page:-

https://www.oxforddiecast.co.uk/collections/1-148

The next planned announcements will be made around the time of the London Toyfair which starts on 23 January 2018.

As before I would like to mention that I have no formal relationship with Oxford Diecast other than as a customer, and as a source of information to them for new models I would like to see made. I do try to keep abreast of what is happening at Oxford Diecast, and report it here. Sometimes my travelling schedule means I am a bit later than some other parts of the internet with updates.

Why don't Oxford make an FX-3 Taxi - the iconic railway forecourt vehicle from 1948-1968, the entire BR steam era???

Good idea for N. Oxford tend to be scaling down 1/43 or 1/76 models to N to economise on some of the research work and design cost for the much smaller N market.. There is an FX3 taxi in 1/76 but made by Classix, now part of Bachmann.  Before anyone picks me up on it, there have been some N models not in the larger scale ranges - all the Foden trucks, many of the buses and coaches - though there is a curious link to the Corgi range for all but two of the buses and the Foden trucks. Oxford's Product Development Manager, Adrienne Fuller, was previously with Corgi in the same sort of role! Perhaps this explains why the Oxford Utility bus has the similarly awful radiator that appears on the Corgi one.

The Beardmore would also be nice, and it would be great for variety, but the FX-3 was the vehicle of the day, and it is more likely to have the volume for a viable diecast. Maybe a Beardmore white metal kit or 3-d print?

Three new items in the batch arriving at retailers now:-

NHI001         Hillman Imp  - Willow Green
NLRL001       Land Rover Lightweight  - United Nations
NMB004       Mercedes Actros D-TEC Combitrailer Trailer  - John Mitchell

The Hillman Imp and the Lightweight Land Rover are completely new, and the John Mitchel Volvo tractor with the D-Tec container trailer and Samskip container is a new combination of existing shapes.

Oxford will be making their next new items announcements over the coming weekend prior to their attendance at the London Toy Fair.

New products will be announced at the London Toyfair on 23 January, and probably the evening before on the members only Oxford Diecast Collectors Facebook Group. Further announcements are made early June and early October.

Delivery timescales are sometimes long if problems are encountered, but all the January 2017 items have now been delivered, and the Imp and Land Rover were June 2017 announcements.

Ordered a couple of Imps despite there being only one colour on offer.

Good price from these people (will have to wait till stock comes in) and free shipping:

I'll add the info to Bargain Basement.

Oooh, a Hillman Imp. With that, some old Minis, 2CVs, classic Beetles, the Cortina and maybe a 1:160 Volvo or two I can almost recreate the teacher's car park at my 1980's high school.
