Babylon 5 returns!
« on: November 11, 2017, 06:31:57 pm »
It was the dawn of the third age of mankind, ten years after the Earth/Minbari war. The Babylon Project was a dream given form. Its goal: to prevent another war by creating a place where humans and aliens could work out their differences peacefully. It's a port of call, home away from home for diplomats, hustlers, entrepreneurs, and wanderers. Humans and aliens wrapped in two million, five hundred thousand tons of spinning metal, all alone in the night. It can be a dangerous place, but it's our last best hope for peace. This is the story of the last of the Babylon stations. The year is 2258. The name of the place is Babylon 5.

Yep, they've been going on about it on the B5 facebook group for weeks.  Seems folk don't read the previous posts and think they're the first to announce it!

Even though I've owned the DVD boxed set for years and watch the whole lot through at least twice a year, I'll be watching on Pick just to celebrate the fact it's finally on TV again.   It will be interesting to see how the aspect ratio compares to the DVDs and also how good or bad the CGI sequences look - they didn't transfer well to DVD.

Thanks for the heads-up. Like @ntpntpntp I've got the DVDs, but certainly going to share my love for the show here.

Sure, the special effects haven't aged especially well -- though the designs of some ships, like the Narn battleships, have a definite Chris Foss quality to them that makes them a pleasure to see every time they're on the screen.

But it's the storyline that counts, together with some really engaging characters. We're so used to arc-driven TV shows nowadays, but even today, a lot of arcs are really little more than tricks to spin out a storyline across several episodes or seasons. Such shows often peter out and just become annoyingly coy about what's going on. B5 had a definite beginning, middle and ending, and the character arcs feel so much more well-thought out because of it.

Cheers, NeMo

Thanks for the heads-up. I had no idea it was being shown again.

Wonderful series, and as I do not have the DVD set I shall have to put up with the probably crassly placed advert breaks! However, I'll record each episode to watch them later and minimise the destruction of scene or mood through judicial fast forwarding.

the problems with the CGI are documented here - ground breaking at the time, still spectacular, and rarely surpassed,  even if not in 4K!

Terrific series and groundbreaking at the time.  Well worth a watch if you've not seen it before.

The first episode shown - The Gathering is all 4:3 , including  the CGI, which is excellent quality.

There is a TNT special edition of this film with improved graphics and extra scenes.

Later episodes are shown in 16:9 and the CGI was not converted - in see above, so not so good.

However ground breaking for 1993!!
