£14 Wireless TruckCam
« on: August 07, 2017, 10:31:51 pm »
Not your normal type of post from me but tonight i made a homemade wireless truckcam for only £14 + Wagon. I saw a video posted on youtube from a US N Scaler who had setup one of these so i thought well it's got to be worth a try.

So from eBay i picked up a Wifi Nanny Cam with built in battery, there seem to be two models, one with a built in battery and one with an external battery. I went with the built in one due to it's smaller size, the external battery is quite large and i dont think it would fit around your average layout.

So for £14 what do you get in the box

A USB charging cable and a tiny instruction manual that makes no sense at all and isn't even worth looking at.

A series of mounting plates so hide (sorry mount) said camera

And then the camera itself.

And its tiny.

Now the reason i say the manual is useless is that apart from telling you which website to go to to get the software for your PC or app for your iphone or android phone the rest of the instructions are all wrong. What you need to do is

(1) Install the phone App
(2) Connect to the inbuilt wireless on the camera (password is 12345678 ... this isn't documented anywhere at all)
(3) Once connected to the camera use the App to scan the QR code on the camera
(4) Using the App change the wireless on the camera to connect to your own WiFi

And thats it job done, you can then view the live stream from the camera wirelessly, capture stills and capture video.

So with that said i roughly mounted the camera in a wagon with a bit of tape to hold the camera

And here is the resulting video stream, in my opionion not bad for £14 at all.

I'm actually pretty impressed with the picture for such a cheap piece of kit.  OK, it's not Sky Sports HD quality, but for fourteen quid...

Just ordered a mini nanny cam or somesuch (strange name) which should arrive next week.
If I can work out how to use it, I'll try fitting it in a wagon and then see if I can get an on board video of the layout.
Could be good fun or, if I can't get it to work.........highly frustrating.

Very interesting !

Do you have some example links to your type ? There seem also to be two connectors in the bottom of some of them which makes them look wide, not yet delved to see if those are the ext battery ones. One for the battery and one for the antenna perhaps (on some) ?

Thanks for showing.
