Easy Railroad Inventory
« on: July 27, 2017, 10:42:46 pm »
Hi all

I'm hoping some of you guys with a little PC knowhow will be able to help. I have the Easy Railroad Inventory database on an old laptop of mine, which is going to go pop any day now. I have all my stock saved in this, but have no idea if I can transfer all the data across to my new laptop.

Unfortunately, it's not possible to download a new copy of this as the website has closed down. Can anyone help? I have over 500 items on the database, and I really hope I don't have to input it all again.

Many thanks.

Presumably you have the original installer still on your old laptop? copy that to the new one and install it, then, (theoretically) the c:/program files/Easy Railroad Inventory/ folder can be copied across and can replace the existing one on your new laptop. it may have all the stuff  with it. If not, let us know and we can search for it :)

If I go into the program to look at the folders and files, the only option I have is to Uninstall the program.  There isn't an option to install it.  Or have I misunderstood you?

You must have installed it in the first place, so there should be an installer file somewhere. It may be the same one which uninstalls it as it's found an instance. Is it called setup.exe or something? Copy that onto your new laptop and run it.

As mickster says you should be able to transfer the actual inventory content when you know where it's stored.

Hi again

I have managed to find the setup.exe now.  It's the part of the program which contains all the data I need to transfer over.  I have managed to put an empty database on my system now, by hook or by crook, but I don't seem to be able to find a folder with my data in.

Hi Andy

This may seem like a simplistic answer to your problem, but can't you just copy the database to a memory stick and transfer it, or if your old laptop still connects to the internet, can't you just email it to yourself with the database file as an attachment?
If you have one of the propriety databases, it may be necessary to save the info as an Excel spreadsheet or similar.

Not trying to teach you to suck eggs but you know it'll likely be one file, you won't miraculously find a folder listing all your data? As you know you can install it I'd probably just copy all of the content of the folder onto your new computer.

That's just it guys :  The only thing I can transfer over at the moment is the shortcut to the database.  I need to know the folder name where the data is stored, and also how to get to it to copy and paste it, or send it to my other computer.  Most frustrating!

Googling easy railroad brings up a facebook account for the software. I don't know if it is still active but an enquiry there might give you the file details

If you've got a shortcut to the database file, right click it and select properties which will give you the path to the actual file. Right click might give you open file location which will open the folder the file is in.

Alternatively is there an option in the application to import/export the database? If so, export it to a memory stick and import on your new machine.

C. :)
