Hi there, from East Lancs.
« on: July 15, 2017, 06:56:38 pm »
Hi there.
I am a complete novice but am very keen to learn.
I'd been thinking of taking up the hobby for years but finally made the decision, when my wife said she'd like to get involved, too.
So, a couple of weeks ago, I started avidly reading mags and surfing the 'net.
I found some wonderful videos and eventually plumped on N Gauge.
Limited space played a big part (5 1/2ft X 3 1/2ft) but I was also very drawn to the company, Kato.
I've been a fan of Japanese culture and products, for many years and Kato's super stylish trains and oh so practical unitrack DC system, really wowed me.
So today, I went out and got my first model train set-up, since I was a lad.
Got myself the Glacier Express Starter Train set, the Unitrack Basic Oval Starter Track set, a yard switching and double crossover track switching sets, some extra track and the gorgeous, Series 485 Hibari 7-car set.
Although I'm thinking 7 cars might be a little excessive, for a 5' X 3', two track layout.
I've just set up a basic oval, to get started, as I won't get a layout board until next week.
It's all been very easy, so far and of course, great fun.
It's funny because, over the years, I'd always imagined I'd get British steam trains but it's the Japanese and North European trains that have inspired me.

Sorry for rambling on and cheers.

Hi Grayn, and welcome to the forum
By cunningly hiding a portion of your tracks in a tunnel you can disguise the 7 car unit. My main layout is 8ft x 4ft and I've ordered an 11 car Poppylino. That really is going to look silly but what the heck :D

Welcome to the forum Grayn and may I congratulate you on going down the Kato route  . Fifer Hobby has some good videos on using Kato track and don't let people say that Kato is too inflexible - it is quite easy to convert a piece or two to 'flexible'. Good luck with it all.
David.
I used to be indecisive - now I'm not - I don't think.
