The Railway Detective (series of books), By Edward Marston

Book Review: I have just finished reading 'The Railway Viaduct', number 3 in the above series.(Bought for 1 in 'The Works' shop!). Briefly, it is a murder mystery, set around the railways of the mid nineteenth century. Inspector Colbert, who got his nickname due to solving crimes on the railway, and his sidekick Sgt Leeming, from Scotland Yard, investigate the death of a man who is thrown from a train in  England. Without giving too much away, they end up in France, where a railway is being built. Apart from being a good read, the story evokes the atmosphere of the time and of the early days of the railways. A good read for those who like murder mysteries. I have already ordered nos 1 and 2 in the series.

I've got the whole set of the railway detective books, great stuff! They do create an atmosphere of the age as well as keeping your interest in the proceedings

That's Andrew Martin, not Edward Marston. He (AM) has done a series of about 7 "steam detective" books featuring Jim Stringer, starting with the "Necropolis Railway" and progressing into WW1. He's also written railway-related non-fiction. See here for more:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Andrew-Martin/e/B001IQZGRC/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1493964382&sr=8-1

I've read Marston's and Martin's books and they're all very good but I prefer the AM ones.

BY the way, I am not Andrew Martin.

Yep, another vote for Andrew Martin. Excellent reads, all of them.

It amazes me just how many books Edward Marston manages to churn out. Just finished his latest one. An OK light read, but very formulaic, and a bit repetitive.

I like  both Marston and Martin.
As others have said, light and easy reading but the stories rattle along.
Very readable.
It's you railway so build it as you want and run whatever you like. The only rule is - ENJOY :
