png format from SCARM?
« on: July 20, 2015, 03:46:48 pm »
Hi all,

I like to work with png files as it suits my existing software workflow. Anyone know how to do it from the software rather than having to faff about converting every last little file by hand? It's really slowing me down quite a bit, so would like to find a way. :hmmm:

Thanks if you do know how, and can share that with me.  :help:
Cheers,
Ian

Sorry, Ian, but I only know the long winded way i.e.
In SCARM - export your file and save as type JPEG
Then open the JPEG file with PAINT and then save the PAINT file as a PNG.
At least then the other files can be deleted if you want.

:thankyousign:

I wish I could - it only offers me .bmp files on mine!  :worried:

Daft question ... why not save all your files in one session, then just throw them into IrfanView under a batch job to convert automatically ?

When I export the SCARM file - Bitmap is shown as the default but the dropbox arrow at the right allows you to select JPEG.
Does that work for you?

That's what is slowing me down! ;)

I use faststone image viewer which is quicker still, but I would really prefer a png option, bmp is not really of this century or even of this millennium come to that. png is more or less everywhere, it's also lossless which helps but without the bulk of bmp.

Not that I can see -  I mean to say, I'm not after having a moan really, as it's free.

I'd shut down and then thought you may have missed a step.
Can you export the SCARM file and save it as a JPEG?
Then you open the JPEG file with PAINT and then save that file as a PNG.
Those options should be available to you.
I don't think you can export the SCARM file and save it as a PNG

:thankyousign: for your extra efforts! Much appreciated!  :)

In truth, it's for the author to include it from a library in his software, then it would show up as an option.  ;)

But, sadly, I think he's going to be a bit busy for doing that right now based on the sneak preview he posted on you tube! Very nice it might end up being too! (well done Mixy, interesting idea if you can pull it off and by Autumn too, well what can one say!)  ;D

Oh and Mixy, if you do read this, please consider allowing us to import from Lightwave! I could make some content then. I know of a good render engine that supports it very well, but it's almost like someone kept it a secret. Sorry if that's pushy, but heck, you got to ask and also you need to ask before it's too late, hence I am asking now  ;)
Cheers,
Ian

Errr ? Eh! Seems odd, or you must have a very slow computer  !
Sorry,
but just to check there aint a misunnerwhatsit going on here

Mike is suggesting the method I would use :
tell IrfanView to convert all the files in a folder to jpg/png = job done. No human intervention on a 'per file' basis.
Is that what you understood Mike to mean ?

Ooops we xxed in the post !
I amended my post to read " jpg/png"  , , npn had me crosseyed as wel LOL!

Anyways, you must be motoring if you are generating BMPs at such a rate that IrfanView or similar cant convert them quick enough !
wot about playing trains whilst it is converting ;)

Nowt wrong with BMPs, nice linear format that old DOSers can write graphics libraries for in C to hook on to K&R compilers like PCC :), , , dont ask ;)

Well yeah, it's been a while since I built the old girl, just a 2.4Ghz Quad, but it gets me by.   ;)

Actually it's slowing me down as it's outside my usual graphics work flow pipeline, and that has been set up for far too long to change it much, as it was optimised for speed and efficiency way back when I set it all up. I only ever add new stuff (formats etc.) to that once any new stuff in question has proven it's mettle. Not much has emerged which has been able to do that of late.

It's one of the few areas where I am on slightly firmer ground, but I spent a fair while earning a living at it, and old habits die hard in that area (well as long as they are good ones and make sense!  ;) ).
Cheers,
Ian

we x'd indeed! No problem.  ;)

Motoring? Well, maybe, but I tend not to mess about when playing in 3d, so I may look quicker to a few people I guess, but in truth it's mostly down to muscle and mind memory by now.  ;D

Well I like to concentrate on the job in hand, so the playing can wait, besides the class 22 is on the test track most of the day while I work on the track plans, I just need to glance across there now and then!

All the cody stuff; don't need to ask, used to be a bit twiddler myself in another previous life time!  (ok, I admit it, I am a nerdy geek or geeky nerd!)  :laugh3:
