Well, there would have to be several. The first would be the bizarre New York Central's 'Black Beetle'; for when you absolutely positively have to get to work in the fastest way possible; just have Wile E. Coyote mount a jet pack onto the top of your RDC; Yup, they really made that thing and took it up to 180MPH out on the flatlands of the midwest, the only long, straight enough, quality rail at the time where they could do that (1964 I believe).  The other is  the Burlinton's Pioneer Zephyr, the all stainless three car express that ushered in the diesel electric streamliner era with the May 26, 1934 13 hour run from Chicago to Denver.

The Shinkansen Nozomi 500 series; perhaps the most beautiful train in the world. (see avatar pic).

They are everywhere, they run forever and they are filthy like my underwear!
My favorite engines are SD40T-2 and SD45T-2!!

F3, because this locomotive was the 1st US locomotive I've seen in a modeler' magazine and make me intersted in US train.
SD70M because this US locomotive was the 1st real US locomotive I've seen when I was sleeping in a hotel near a track from the Norfolk Southern in 2011.

I have a new favourite.... EMD CF7. Converted from redundant F units to replace ageing low power road switchers, built by Santa Fe's own workshops and given a face only a mother could love.... Poor old CF7s !

Nobody makes an RTR version yet, but I'll add it to my list of wants...

If it's got rails... you have my full, undivided attention - Steam, diesel and electric, 'tis all good !

I love all US diesels. I guess if I was pushed the SD40-2 in Santa Fe yellow bonnet would get my vote. Don't have any American N gauge but I do in G.

The SD40-2 is my favourite locomotive from anywhere. I think it looks particularly nice in its dual green British Columbia Railway colours as follows:

But, I think the best looking diesel locomotive from anywhere and for all time is the Alco PA. Here is my Kato PA and PB in SF warbonnet livery:

Tim, they are signals made by Showcase Miniatures.

https://www.showcaseminiatures.net/n_scale/n_scale_century_foundry_signals/522.html

The ones I have are an older model that uses fibre optic cable from below rather than LEDs in the signal heads as the new model has.

I love GP20s ! I reckon they look best in the early Burlington livery...
