All,

Nearly finished building the original roundy roundy for the boy and am starting to plan the next (for me!!). I plan on taking my time and learning from my mistakes on the first one. I have got it into my head to model the DN & SR line at Winchester Chesil. Does anyone know of any resources to help me here. I have unearthed a number of pictures of the station which will help me along with some info on the stock that ran through there. I'm keen to find plns of the station itself, dimensions etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jon

There is a book on the Didcot to Winchester line, only has one picture of the outside of the station though

You may have seen this link

Might be worth contacting Winchester museum or the Hampshire Records office to see if they have any more information.

Years ago, I remember seeing a model of Winchester Chesil. I've done a Google search on 'Winchester Chesil model railway' and found this reference in Model Railway Journal, Issue 9

http://www.modelrailwayjournal.com/issue.php?s=9

And the same google search found this

There is also a Winchester model railway group. I don't know much about them though.

Just one Pendolino, give it to me, a beautiful train, from Italy

Thanks Pengi. I have indeed found most of these references already. In fact I've compiled quite a long dossier with all of the pictures and data I have managed to find so far. Just trying to exhaust all of the "Free" info there is before I start buying books etc. This is a long term project and it has tacit approval from Mrs J but I want to do it right - am considering scratch building some of it.

hi

just wondering if you intend to model the bar end yard as well
thats what i intended to do but could not find the track plans so to say

Jonspadge

The curent plan is to have a fiddle yard that feeds the tunnel and then end the model just past the road bridge. If I ever get more space then I could add an additional board to the model the bar end yard. All I have to go on for that is a picture of the goods shed and the description of sidings, passing loops plus a couple of snapshots of some of the coal stithies. Apparently there was a large crane there as well.

Hi John,

I'm not sure where you're based, but visiting the site will allow you to measure the footbridge and the tunnel mouth. The latter is hidden behind a multi-storey car park but accessible. It'll also allow a visit to The Black Boy which is one of the best pubs I've been to in the last few years.

Cheers,

Pix

Pengi - I'm only five years late, but have just come across your posts in connection with Winchester Chesil.

It caught my attention because some 40-odd years ago I suggested that my friends and I as members of the then-new Scalefour Society should build a model of Chesil, based upon a single article in Trains Illustrated from 1961.

If you are still interested in Chesil I would be happy to give you more info about the model and may be able to give you some links to other members of that group.

The resultant model is now in Basingstoke.
