Fitting Tender pickups.
« on: December 08, 2017, 01:21:55 am »
My two Duchesses have tender pickups and run superbly. I'd like to fit a tender pickup to my black 5. I could probably cobble something together but has anyone done anything like this?

If you have the Poole or early Chinese version (ie not-6pin dcc tender drive) the bespoke pickups are available from BR Lines, or at least used to be.

If not, Peter's Spares may help.

Thanks, don't think BR Lines has the black 5 ones now - will try Peters Spares. Should be quite possible to make something at worst.
How do I get the body off my Chinese Poole-spec 5?

If its the same as Poole locos you need to remove the screw through the front bogie pivot. BR Lines show the LMS tender chassis GF1899 which was fitted to the Black 5 with pickups as extra. He will probably sell the pickups separately.

Don't take too much notice of BR Lines web spares list-he has a lot of things that are not on the website, and phone call could elicit further details and availabilty.

He will also help with any problems you have with fitting spares/replacements when you phone him.

The Pickup sets are identical for all locos, so there is no specific one for a Black 5 ( or any other). The part you want is GF0001 and is displayed clearly on the Poole spares on his website, 3.95:
http://brlines.co.uk/original-farish-spares/

Body removal is the front screw that holds the bogie on, the body will then lift up, and slide back to release. Be careful when refitting not to snag, bend or damage the upper valve gear - this should sit behind the footplate motion bracket casting - inspect before dismantling to see what I mean. Tender top just lifts off - it may be lightly glued on a Chinese model, but should just pull off with a tug.

Tip - when wiring the pickups, run the black pickup wire under the tender/body rather than through the hole in the front of the tender and across the cab. This looks better, but more importantly allows complete removal of the loco and tender bodies without desoldering the wire for maintenance. Also reduces risk of damaging the tender body when soldering the wire - I've seen a couple wrecked by folks trying to get a soldering iron in to the top of the motor attachment and melting a gouge out of the front of the tender instead.
