Title: Christmas presents to self!!
Post by: GroupC on December 17, 2014, 05:58:53 PM
I don't think anyone's started this yet, but what, in N gauge or anything else, are you "justifiably" buying yourselves for Christmas?

The advantages of doing this include: (a) you get what you want, (b) you can show genuine pleasure when unwrapping it, (c) you don't have to wait to open it if you don't want to, (d) you can be as self-indulgent as you want.

But the disadvantages of course include: (a) you have to pay for it yourself, (b) it can dilute your "presents for others" budget, (c) there's no surprise.

For starters and to get the ball rolling, I've asked my personal Santa for these - let's hope I think I've been good: Quite a few building kits to develop my layout; A Walthers gasometer kit; a pledge to myself for 1 or 2 blue class 31's when they FINALLY arrive; weathering powders etc.

And on the non-railway side, a turbo trainer so I can train on my bike indoors in winter; several obscure CD's to replace those lost/forgotten tracks; Autocourse 2014 book; stickers to personalise my laptop (!). And anything else I can think of.

Not bought by myself but I have spent the gift money from my grandparents on a kit for the Millenium Falcon from Star Wars! Always wanted one and decided it was about time. Not quite N gauge, sorry!!

Best wishes
Simon

I've always bought myself a Christmas present - as GroupC says it ensures that you get something that you really want.

This year I've pre-ordered the 64xx pannier tank in early BR logo. I've got the 57xx but they were not auto fitted so I need something to haul my autocoaches as a change from the 14xx.

I've got so much on pre-order with a well known retailer in Sheffield that I always ask for vouchers for birthday (Oct) and Christmas. To my mind both Farish and Dapol have shot themselves in the foot by not getting stuff through in time for Christmas, even though they were announced what seems years ago. There's no N gauge stuff I want other than what's on pre-order so I'm not tempted in that respect.
Other than that, Liz Hurley's told me she's busy :'(
Excuses ::)

Not really a present to myself, but my dear mum has long since decided that it is easier to contribute to my n gauge habit by simply financing some new stuff at Christmas rather than going through model shops herself.

This year I am torn between:

Nice position to be in I know, but Christmas and Birthday, plus Warley / TINGS are the only times I get to really indulge in the hobby.

Welcome any thoughts on which option I should go for.

Ordered a Graham Farish 370-180 Seaside Excursion set as they're now out and no longer pre-order as a present to myself.  New to the hobby and still building up stock, only had freight stuff till now....

Merry Christmas !

I prnt off my wish list from Hattons with a selection of different priced items for my mum and she can choose something she knows I like. A succession of Christmas and birthdays and she is now on first name terms with the staff!  ::)

My present to myself is the Railway Children Pack. Couldn't resist as it's my favourite film even if it is 'Orribly Oversize and now in stock at Kernow so should be on its way anyday now :claphappy:

C. :)

PS @skyline ... Metals 37 .... They seem to be selling rather well so get in quick!

Thanks to a timely recruiting bonus I have gone rather nuts. It started with a Langley LNER railcar kit which needed a chassis of course. Then I indulged in another batch of AtsoCad brick wagons--which needed wheels, couplings and transfers. And while I was ordering transfers I thought I might as well get some for coal wagons too. Then I talked myself into some coal wagons and Peco brick loads, and then some more coal wagons from Mathieson, and I just bought a V2 on eBay to go under an AtsoCad K3 body one day. I think I need to stop there--or to refer another new hire!

I agree with you about the Farish & Dapol stuff, the West Country & BoB seem to have disappeared off the radar and like you there's nothing current that I want apart from what I need to do myself on the layout, hope to have one board operational shortly!  ::) So present to myself 36 pints of Palmers Best  :claphappy:  :beers: and one of their tea mugs for when I need to sober up!

I'm thinking of heading to Liverpool or Sheffield to buy some bits after Christmas as a late present to myself - I reckon I'll find something to impulse buy...

On the non-train front, I am thinking about getting a 4G phone, most likely an iPhone 5c/5s

Hi all,

Have been very greedy to myself this year and still trying to justify what happened.........

SWMBO asked what I really, really wanted. A Mabar Spanish DMU TER 597 (not cheap) from a Spanish ebay shop...Fine.

Came to pay, it had been sold  :(

So next Arnold RENFE 321 loco in green but wasn't sure if I liked the paint job (posted on 'continental'). Also liked the black and yellow 'taxi' livery but not available.

Went for a Portuguese CP 4701 for a future more modern spanish/portuguese layout and 3 spanish coaches to be from SWMBO SANTA. Done and dusted.

The coaches were a good idea but the loco was where it all went wrong. Limited edition so thought worth getting now but the big kid in me will want to play!

Then Spanish ebay re listed as had 2 more DMUs in stock and another spanish shop had the RENFE 321 'taxi' in stock.

Needed a bus so went on a German site and bought a bus, well 2, some bus shelters, 2 french coaches, a spanish container wagon and 2 tractors for the farm....plus the DMU and loco above  :worried:

Daren't go to the bank to check my balance.

With regard to the original post about what can you justify buying yourself, it is simply 1 thing... ONE BUS as I need to work out the clearance of a roundabout at the ferry terminal.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS to you all and any turkey and ham leftovers will be much appreciated.

Cheers weave  :beers:

I have an old roofless rotting rotten 7' x 5' garden shed. So as a Christmas present to myself I am going to replace it with something approximating 25' x 9', which was once a portable office building but, as far as the appropriate regulations (planning & building) are concerned, will be a garden shed. I don't need to tell you what I shall put in it.

I was doing really well in not spending anything with the Pendolino kickstarter in full swing. But then I got the email saying the DRS 37/4 was out then 2 days later the DRS 57/3. So my play of not spending any money has gone right out of the window!

Never mind I'm sure I will get over it!

Just been notified by Hattons that my pre order for the Countryside Coal set containing a S&DJR blue Jinty is being packed for despatch, don't think it will reach here by Christmas but should be here by the Spanish Christmas, 3 King's Day, 6th January so it is almost a Christmas present.   :)

The Digital control unit included with the set will be up for sale once I know it all works.

I tracked down a Scenecraft Great Central Rly signal box

as I own a few steam locos that had strong GC connections in BR times, however I don't have room for a full GCR-style station.
A signal box can still mark out the company and area modelled all the same.

Title: Re: Christmas presents to self!!
Post by: BobB on December 23, 2014, 05:20:46 PM
Well it will not actually be represented as a present to self but, realistically, it could be regarded as such. In a different thread there is all of this praise for a kettle -the GF 4f 0-6-0 tender locomotive. Very seductive !

Well, normal "Western" Christmas is all sown up as regards presents. But - SWMBO is from Russia and follows their orthodox Christian method of worship. The orthodox Russians maintain the old calender, two weeks later than those in the west. So; this means we have two Christmases, 25-12 and 07-01, and also two new years, 01-01 and 14-01. Since my birthday coincides with the "old" new year, maybe another present from SWMBO is in order ?

If I order a GF 4F in a set or as a split from set stand alone, does this count as a present to self; and more importantly (in case I reject negative comments) what are the code numbers for the set and/or the split from set numbers. I suppose I ought to worry about delivery times as well.........

Answers by return please, the alcoholic haze may start to dissipate very soon.

This last 4 or 5 weeks I've bought (for Xmas??)
Farish J39
Farish green Class 26
Dapol green Class 22 milk tank set
Dapol 45xx
Farish City of Birmingham

and... a few wagons

I am now rapidly approaching financial ruin and have DEFINITELY run out of pocket money.

I really must start laying track on my baseboards so I can start using this stuff in earnest!!

I think I might be in for a very expensive Xmas present for her to make up for my profligate expenditure - once she finds out my N gauge bill!!

Thank God for German efficiency.

Everything I bought 2 to 3 weeks ago from Spain and Portugal is nowhere to be seen.

Luckily the 3 spanish coaches from DM Toys (agreed present) came within days and my non justifiable stuff from DM Toys and Modellbahnshop Lippe equally so.

Will give SWMBO the boxes today and then have to bribe the postman into be discreet about deliveries from Iberia.

She knows about the Portuguese loco but not the 2 Spanish ones. I tend to say they're just decals, cost about £2.50 and I can't believe the amount of packaging people use, although saying that I can't believe .....

Enjoy your stockings everyone,

Off to Majestic Wine to spend even more

My Christmas present to me this year will be either :

Dapol Schools loco "Malvern" in Bulleid green livery

or

Dapol A4 loco with valances "Empire of India" in garter blue livery.

I will choose whichever is LEAST likely to be discounted by the major retailers after Christmas.

My feeling is that the A4s are selling better than the Bulleid liveried Schools so I think there is more likelihood that the Schools will be discounted before the A4s.

What are your views ?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Joe

It's Xmas 🎅. I'd get both - then the discount issue doesn't matter so much.

I've got 3 weeks off over Christmas so my present to myself is more timber, another sheet of ply and track, lots of track. Time to start stage 2 of the railway room even though stage 1 is far from complete. I have the modelling bug big time  :D :ngauge:

4 Bottles of Highland Park Viking Honour, :)
4 Bottles of Highland Park Dragon legend, :)
Already purchased... (and one opened).

N gauge? depends on what I can find next week, I've taken a couple of days off, of which, one will have to be donated to SWMBO for shopping.

I have invested in a pair of Dentist/medical loupes with x6 magnification.  Eyesight is not what it used to be but still good and i want to keep it that way. 8)

They are a good price now, about the cost of a loco, if you buy them direct from China and they make working on small items so much easier. :beers:

As an aside you can get an amazing range of medical instruments from China on Ebay at good prices.

I beg your indulgence, but my xmas present to myself is not [shock horror] in 1:144

it is a Revell 1:72 A400M 'Atlas' transport kit, which although listed on Amazon at over £100, I found on fleabay at £39.99 with free p&p.

so my wargames forces have beaten my railway, mea culpa, but WHAT A DEAL ! :-)
SWMBO even agreed it was a good buy ------- and that doesn't happen very often !

I love DMU's.  It looks as if I won't be buying myself a Class 142 for Christmas.

They are available though Ebay or direct through the Bangood and other websites and they are all direct from China.

A short note on use.

I use x3.5 (available at Boots etc) x4, x6 and x7 reading type glasses to model.  They are very good but the disadvantage is they are single lens and you have to hold the model closer and closer to your face to get them in focus.  If you have a big nose x6 is about the limit :D.

The dental loupes are telescopes (only buy this type) with multiple lenses so the working distance is normal, about 15 inches from your face and this is adjustable.  Working under magnification takes a bit of time to get used to but if you want to paint eyebrows on an N scale figure, or the equivalent, invaluable. 8)

The Loupes can either come mounted on a spectacle frame, good if you have normal eyesight, or on a headband mounting that allows you to wear your normal glasses at the same time, good if you have an astigmatism or similar.

Also find someone who has a pair before you buy and try them out, as they are not cheap and are a significant investment.

Can we expect a sale soon ?

It's my birthday next month and I want to make sure that I get at least one decent present so I have given up on waiting for the Dapol Schools class loco to be discounted and bought "Malvern" in Southern malachite livery (sorry Mr.Boyden).

I would like to buy some matching coaches so can someone tell me whether it would be OK to backdate the BR malachite green coaches from Dapol (Maunsells) or Farish (Bulleids) to Southern Railway livery ?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Joe

I just splurged on a bespoke footbridge kit from York Modelrail. I noticed their new OO Great Northern footbridge and asked if they might consider a 1:148 version so I could bash two to configure the bridge I need for Welwyn North and they offered a bespoke version incorporating the gas lamp stanchions! For the price of a couple of locos a major headache had been solved. (The fancy banisters on the staircases are a distinctive feature of these bridges and a pig to scratch build)

I've taken a fancy to this Japanese pre-war EMU (http://www.hs-tamtam.co.jp/item-72780.html) which is on sale at quite a reasonable price.

Oooh, how time flies.

I struck that one off the list as too "Rule 1" even for me, but subsequently discovered that it would, with some modifications, be perfectly justifiable for my purposes, by which time it had long sold out, now they say procrastination doesn't pay but wait long enough and one will pop up on the second hand market in as-new condition at about 75% of the retail price:
