Belgian Railways level crossing collision video
« on: June 14, 2018, 11:47:42 am »
Picked this up from the French Forum du N. Infrabel (sort of Network Rail for Belgium) has made a publicity video to reinforce in drivers' minds that a level crossing is no place to be when a train arrives at speed.

I claim no responsibility for whatever advertisement precedes the video! :-)

Yesterday's National news carried film of crazy antics at UK level crossings where some people on foot/bicycle who are obviously tired of living can't wait for a train to pass over the crossing. Now I don't give a  :censored: whether they live or not - it's the train drivers I feel desperately sorry for, along with those who have to clean up any resulting mess :veryangry2:

I totally support Newportnobby's comments. I spent a good number of years attending inquests into all sorts of rail fatalities for British Rail and usually it is the Train Driver who ends up as the victim. I know people are very sorry for the person who has been killed and their family but they overlook the effect it has had on a Driver who could do nothing about it. I know of Drivers who could never go back on the footplate. I remember one Solicitor asking a Driver why he hadn't stopped the train and it had to be explained to him that, at the speed the train was travelling it just wasn't physically possible, even with a full emergency brake application. The Solicitor then followed up with a second question - "Well, did you attempt to swerve out of the way then?" You couldn't make it up. Even the Coroner sat there speechless.

There's an often repeated (UK) TV series documenting the railways of India. One segment looks at rail fatalities and features a very moving interview with a driver who has suffered thirty plus fatalities.

I think that says everything that is bad about cyclists, 90% of the problems were caused by impatient cyclists, similar to their attitude on the road and at traffic lights.   :veryangry:    :censored:

Lemmings aren't as bad
How about putting a few hundred volts through the barriers as soon as they start to come down? >:D

Honestly if people are stupid enough to put themselves in that danger if they fall foul then it's their own fault and they have to live / not live any longer with the consequences.
As others have said its the train drivers that have to live with it 99% of the time and with family that work on the railway I know how devastating it can be for them, my brother as part of his duties used to have to go to the scene after "one under" incidents and even he has been affected by it. The vast majority of them were cases of idiots chancing it rather than suicides, to be brutally honest when its idiots who chanced it he has ZERO sympathy for them.

I actually think we should be much harsher on these idiots who chance it, IIRC trespassing on the railways can impose a One thousand pound fine and while I know in many a case it would be hard to enforce. But even to make a point if people are caught deciding to chance it when the lights come on still crossing then they should just get hammered with the fine people will soon take note and think twice!

But then comes education, I am sure almost every railway does those videos on an almost annual basis, I think they should do a scheme where Network Rail do it live in front of people at local stations and have it going round the country using dummies or pig carcass to show people the reality up close and personnel enforcing those that have been caught to attend.

Maybe just maybe then if people see the reality up close they will be less idiotic and if not well their wallets get hit and the money goes to help those railway employees who have to deal with the aftermath!

A good argument, but there are simply not enough Transport police/any sort of police to nick the blighters in the act.

Education cannot correct the behaviour of these idiots.

In the Network Rail video, I am sure it is the same guy on a bike who gets knocked off his bike at 0.08, lifts the barrier at 1.08 (I think he even has the same rucksack on his back), and possibly the same guy who manages to get the barrier to raise at 1.43.
