I've been trying to do a little research on wagons that refuel the diesel tanks located within TMD's, Around the late 70's. I think I'm massively questioning if the information I have found and trying to remember is correct.

Reading up TTA's were more commonly used in the late 1970's for refuelling and some still used today which will help with not being to strict on the era I'm going for. Information I've read indicates with photo's some depot's used old three axle milk tanks to store sludge and grime collected from bottom on the fuel storage tanks but guessing nothing was exclusively used across the network?

I have been trying to understand 'classes' a bit more and thanks for forum member suggestions I've purchased a couple of reference books. Revolution Trains do a Class B tanker but again guessing this was only for moving fuel for road use i.e petrol stations?

Kind Regards for reading :beers:

I'm modelling the Western Region & That link has cleared a lot up for me, Sincerely appreciate it. Seems TTA's are what I should be purchasing :beers:

i use  a class 08 or 31 with a small wagon - 3 / 5plank repainted, or an old battered one that i found on a market stall
that needed rewheeling from my scrap box , a new buffer superglueing as a barrier wagon for taking down the branch
and 3 TTAs esso or black weathere with oil spills and a brake van

the links clear up any thoughts

Hadn't even thought of a brake van to be honest, I always thought that was a steam thing ( Slap my hand in disgust ), Appreciate the help with this even small things like this need a lot of research. On the lookout for a battered wagon as barrier wagon & possibly make up some little refuelling hoses to put into it as detail dirty

Our (Revolution Trains) 35T tanks were used for loco fuel later in life (the unbranded black ones in particular).

Cheers Mike

i tend to only run a barrier wagon if testing my friend 's steam locos but usually its the class 08 / 31 alone with tanks down the branch to the wagon works or a siding  (fiddle yard ) . would consider reading george dent's weathering tips ( a new skill Im learning ) in model rail

@crewearpley40 You've now opened up a new world of information with that link :beers:

I was only planning on three (Now TTA's) on my layout due to the size but now got to incorporate at least one barrier wagon and brake van. Honestly so fascinating when a what I thought was a quick small question opens up a world of knowledge and great reading

hi drakken ( not real name ? )

on the subject of weathering ....

im sure a scroll through may help, or your own techniques.

i have small shed andused plasticard plus the fuelling wires

from old spares wire and very much strachbuilt. good luck
but on the subject of dangerous chemical trains eg the ammonia trains :

i do remember seeing a class 40 / 25 on an ammonia tanks train in the peak district -  the edale route with two babrier wagons, two brakes

@crewearpley40 Apologies for not replying I got side tracked on the links you posted last night & forgot to say thank you. So much information to read.

I've got the plan in mind for the small rake and weathering to have a go with on three Peco 15ft Tanker Kit's I bought. Nice little project to keep me going and set the scene on the layout  :beers:

drakken sorry no worry be interesting being kept up to date, interesting project - i am hectic with other things, the ammonia tanks will have travelled from immingham, doncaster, sheffield, via the hopevalley, stockport, northwich, chester to ellesmere port. on the subject of the depot layout, much has featured in these boards, in magazaines, keep asking questions, sure somebody will answer them

i did hear a few years ago :

fuel in tanks travel by rail every Tuesday on a Fawley Southampton to St Phillips Marsh, Bristol, Laira, Penzance Long Rock train. It to Bristol, drops off the tanks  and maybe picks up the empties then heads to Plymouth.

on the subject of tta tanks :

im not sure what happened at old oak

Viewing the link right now but saving it for a proper look when I'm home. Currently looking at the 1970's photo stock, Very handy for the weathering side too  :beers:

D834 "Pathfinder" (Warship) heads west through Totnes with assorted vans and ESSO TTA Tanks. Checking online D834 later to confirm (Not really needed) if ever in BR Blue but worst case a Class 42 I believe in BR Blue will do nicely  :beers:
